Footymad preview History of the Carlisle United v Bournemouth fixture

The Blues are ready to welcome Bournemouth on their long trip to Cumbria tomorrow, determined to stop the rot against their opponents, having lost out to their rivals on four of the previous eight occasions at Brunton Park, United having only won twice, while two of the games have ended as a draw. One of those drawn matches coming on the last day of the 2007-08 season with both sides needing a victory at opposite ends at the table.

Carlisle taking the lead in the 57th minute when Scott Dobie smacked home the rebound after a Grant Smith header had hit the base of the Bournemouth post, before Brett Pitman equalised for the Cherries only 11 minutes later in front of 12,223 spectators. A point apeice for either team in the end doing nothing for both clubs as the visitors were relegated to League Two and United were left to rue what might have been over the last few weeks of the campaign as they had to settle for a play-off spot instead of automatic promotion.

The last time before that that the two sides met in League One came in the 2006-07 campaign when Carlisle ran out comfortable 3-1 winners in front of 8,989 spectators. Danny Graham from the penalty spot on three minutes and Danny Livesey with a header just before the half-hour mark giving United an early 2-0 lead. Sam Vokes pulled a goal back for the Cherries on 62 minutes before Neale McDermott then made sure of all three points for Carlisle with an 85th minute strike.

Matches between the clubs have been few and far between over the years, with the sides having only met eight times at Brunton Park. The Cherries have an excellent record here having won four of those meetings, their best victory coming in the 1962-63 Division Three season, as Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic, when they won 3-0 as 6,903 fans looked on, United eventually being relegated at the end of that campaign.

Carlisle's only other home success over the Cherries prior to the 2006-07 season came in another Division Three relegation campaign, this time in 1995-96 as the Blues spent just one season at that level after winning the league below in 1994-95. The thumping 4-0 win was United's best margin of victory that season, with all the goals coming in the second-half from Gary Bennett, David Currie, Rory Delap and Steve Hayward in front of 5,401 spectators.
