Footymad preview History of the Carlisle United v Bournemouth fixture

The Blues are ready to welcome Bournemouth on their long trip to Cumbria tomorrow, United hoping to improve on a record of four wins, two draws and four defeats in their ten home games over the years against the Cherries.

Last season in League One Carlisle winning 2-1 in mid-August 2011 in front of 4,422 spectators, with Tom Taiwo putting United ahead in the 49th minute before ex-Blues loanee Harry Arter equalised for the visitors from the penalty spot with 61 minutes gone. The Cumbrians though taking all three points when Nathan Byrne put into his own goal with 77 minutes on the clock.

In the 2010-11 campaign in League One Carlisle picked another win at home to the Cherries with a narrow 1-0 victory in mid-March, Peter Murphy scoring the only goal of the game in the 26th minute as just 4,385 fans looked on. One of the four drawn matches on the other hand came on the last day of the 2007-08 season with both sides needing a victory at opposite ends at the table.

Carlisle taking the lead in the 57th minute when Scott Dobie smacked home the rebound after a Grant Smith header had hit the base of the Bournemouth post, before Brett Pitman equalised for the Cherries only 11 minutes later in front of 12,223 spectators. A point apeice for either team in the end doing nothing for both clubs as the visitors were relegated to League Two and United were left to rue what might have been over the last few weeks of the campaign as they had to settle for a play-off spot instead of automatic promotion.

The last time before that that the two sides met in League One came in the 2006-07 campaign when Carlisle ran out comfortable 3-1 winners in front of 8,989 spectators. Danny Graham from the penalty spot on three minutes and Danny Livesey with a header just before the half-hour mark giving United an early 2-0 lead. Sam Vokes pulled a goal back for the Cherries on 62 minutes before Neale McDermott then made sure of all three points for Carlisle with an 85th minute strike.

Matches between the clubs have been few and far between over the years, with the sides having only met ten times at Brunton Park. The Cherries have an excellent record here having won four of those meetings, their best victory coming in the 1962-63 Division Three season, as Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic, when they won 3-0 as 6,903 fans looked on, United eventually being relegated at the end of that campaign.

Carlisle's only other home success over the Cherries prior to the 2006-07 season came in another Division Three relegation campaign, this time in 1995-96 as the Blues spent just one season at that level after winning the league below in 1994-95. The thumping 4-0 win was United's best margin of victory that season, with all the goals coming in the second-half from Gary Bennett, David Currie, Rory Delap and Steve Hayward in front of 5,401 spectators.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle's recent poor home run has seen them win just one, draw two and lose three of their last six matches at Brunton Park. While the Cumbrians have only scored five goals in those games, a worringly large twelve have been leaked at the other end. Bournemouth's away form is none too clever either though, seeing them win just one, draw two and lose three of their last six matches on the road. While the Cherries have netted seven goals in those games, a hefty thirteen have hit the back of the wrong net.

Carlisle, in 13th place, see themselves just below half-way in the npower League One table, showing a record of 19 points from their 14 games played so far. Bournemouth meanwhile, in 19th spot, are hovering perilously just above the relegation zone, with 15 points from their 14 matches contested to date.
