History of the Carlisle United v Bristol City fixture

The Blues welcome the Robins to Cumbria this weekend hoping to continue their good home record against City. Of the 19 games played at Brunton Park, United have won nine times while the Robins have been victorious five times.

The last time the two teams met in Cumbria was back in November 1997 when the visitors ran out cosy 3-0 winners in a Division Two (third tier) encounter. Shaun Goater bagged a brace and Gregory Goodridge scored the third goal for City as 5,044 fans looked on, with the clubs eventually going their seperate ways at the end of the season as City were promoted in second place and United were relegated in 23rd position.

The most memorable fixture between the two sides was in April 2003 in front of 50,913 spectators at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, with Bristol City running out 2-0 winners over Carlisle in the LDV Vans Trophy Final thanks to two goals in the last 14 minutes from ex-Blue Lee Peacock and current Fulham star Liam Rosenior.

United's best win at home to the Robins was a thumping 5-0 win in the 1965-66 season, a campaign contested in the old Division Two. The Carlisle goalscorers that August Saturday afternoon as 10,694 fans looked on being Joe Livingstone (2), Chris Balderstone, Stanley Harland and James Blain who was soon to be transferred to Exeter City.

Two of City's five victories at Brunton Park have been by three goal margins, the second one of those being the 3-0 win in 1997 when the sides last met in Cumbria. Quirkily, the earlier three goal margin victory happened the first time the sides ever played each other at Brunton Park, City winning 5-2 in the old Third Division in 1962-63. The Blues goalscorers that day, as 8,229 spectators looked on, being Les Dagger and Reg Davies in a campaign that would eventually see United relegated at the end of the season.

Recent respective form guides

United have collected two wins and three draws from their last six home matches. A total of 11 goals have been scored by the Cumbrians in those games, with seven conceded, four of those shipped coming in a 4-1 defeat against Yeovil, that being six home games ago and the last time Carlisle were defeated at Brunton Park.

The away form of Bristol City in the league however, is much more impressive, picking up five victories from their last six matches on the road, although the Robins did lose their last away game 1-0 at Gillingham. Eight goals have been scored by City in these matches with only a measly two conceded at the other end.

United lie just one point outside the play-off positions in League One, the Blues currently sitting in seventh spot after picking up 68 points from their 43 games played so far.

Bristol City are holding onto the final promotion place in the League One table, the Robins four points ahead of third-placed Nottingham Forest with just three games to go. City having accumulated 79 points from the 43 games they have played so far.
