History of the Carlisle United v Charlton Athletic fixture

Carlisle welcome the Addicks tomorrow, holding a good advantage on games between the two sides at Brunton Park. Of the 16 matches played the Blues have won seven, Charlton three, and the other six games have ended level.

Last season in League One in late October the Blues defeated the Addicks 3-1 at Brunton Park in front of 6,077 spectators. Ian Harte putting Carlisle 1-0 up on 41 minutes before Deon Burton equalised for the visitors from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time. Two excellent second-half Graham Kavanagh strikes though ensuring that all three points went the way of United.

Before that match, Athletic and the Cumbrians last played each other in the 1985-86 Division Two campaign, at Brunton Park, both clubs heading in opposite directions at the end of the season as the Addicks were promoted and the Blues were relegated. Wes Saunders bagging a brace for United in the penultimate game of the campaign as Carlisle went 2-0 up by the half-hour mark.

An own-goal by Jim Tolmie that started somewhere near the halfway line and ended up in the back of the Carlisle net, began the slide to defeat though. That own goal from hell giving Charlton a stake in the game, and firing them up for an eventual 3-2 win through strikes from Mark Stuart and Mark Aizlewood.

Of United's seven home wins against the Addicks, three have been by a three goal margin, the highest scoring one of those being a 5-2 victory in the old Division Two in 1971-72. The Carlisle goals, in front of 9,724 spectators, coming through a Bobby Owen hat-trick, Bob Hatton and Chris Balderstone, while the Charlton strikes were a Tot Winstanley own goal and a finish from the slightly amusingly named Dick Plumb.

All Charlton's three wins at Brunton Park have come by a one goal margin, with the Jim Tolmie game no doubt the most well remembered, the other two victories both being 2-1 successes in 1980-81, one of those coming in the League Cup. So the Addicks will not only be looking for their fourth win in Carlisle tomorrow but they will also be hoping to improve on a record which has seen them concede a hefty 32 goals in 16 games at Brunton Park.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle have collected two wins three draws and one defeat from their last six home matches. These games have seen the Cumbrians score just seven goals, though they have only conceded a measly four.

Charlton meanwhile have a poor recent record on the road, seeing them win only one, draw two and lose their three of their of their last six matches away from the Valley. While the Addicks have notched a healthy seven goals, a bumper ten have hit the back of the wrong net.

Carlisle's total of 19 points from their 12 games played sees them sitting in the last play-off place, in sixth, in Npower League One. Charlton on the other hand see themselves just below half-way in the table, in 14th, showing a record of 16 points from their 12 games contested to date.
