History of the Charlton Athletic v Carlisle United fixture
Carlisle visit the Valley tomorrow after breaking their away duck against the Addicks last season. United having otherwise lost twelve and drawn six of the 19 games played between the two sides in south-east London.
So, in the 2010-11 campaign the Blues gained all three points for the first time despite going 1-0 down in the tenth minute to a Bradley Wright-Phillips strike, the Cumbrians though then scoring three without reply for a 3-1 win thanks to Ben Marshall on 27, Craig Curran after 62 and then Rory Loy in the 80th minute as 12,797 spectators looked on on an early March Tuesday evening.
In 2009-10 in League One the Blues went down 1-0 at the Valley in early April 2010 in front of 17,229 fans. Sam Sodje's header shortly before half-time seeing the Addicks take all three points in a tightly contested match. The last time before that that the teams met each other at the Valley was in mid-September 2006 in the second round of the Carling Cup. United going down narrowly 1-0 again to their then Premiership opponents as Darren Bent scored the only goal of the game for the Addicks in the 57th minute as just 8,190 spectators looked on.
Carlisle also played away to Charlton in the old Division Two in the 1985-86 campaign, the return fixture at Brunton Park that season of course being the infamous Jim Tolmie match. The game in London was played at Selhurst Park though in Charlton's temporary spell away from the Valley. The Addicks winning 3-0 with only 3,059 fans in attendance thanks to goals from former Blue John Pearson, George Shipley and John Humphrey.
Charlton may have defeated Carlisle 12 times out of 19 at home but they have never beaten the Blues by a bigger margin than three goals. As for United, their win last season in which they netted three times aside, the most goals they have ever scored away to the Addicks in their six draws is two on one occasion, although the Cumbrians have also found the net twice in two of their defeats.
