Footymad preview History of the Carlisle United v Charlton Athletic fixture

Carlisle welcome the Addicks tomorrow, holding an advantage on games between the two sides at Brunton Park. Of the 17 matches played the Blues have won seven, Charlton four, and the other six games have ended level. United though slipping to one of those four defeats last season in late October 2010, the Blues going down 4-3 in a very entertaining encounter.

The Addicks 3-0 up after 47 minutes through goals from Johnnie Jackson, former Blue Joe Anyinsah and Paul Benson as 5,624 fans looked on. Carlisle though producing a stirring fightback to remarkably make it 3-3 through Mike Grella, Craig Curran and Gary Madine in the space of 19 second-half minutes, only for Benson to break Cumbrian hearts when he headed home in stoppage time to give the visitors the 4-3 win.

In the 2009-10 campaign meanwhile in League One in late October 2009 the Blues defeated the Addicks 3-1 at Brunton Park in front of 6,077 spectators. Ian Harte putting Carlisle 1-0 up on 41 minutes before Deon Burton equalised for the visitors from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time. Two excellent second-half Graham Kavanagh strikes though ensuring that all three points went the way of United.

Before that match, Athletic and the Cumbrians last played each other in the 1985-86 Division Two campaign, at Brunton Park, both clubs heading in opposite directions at the end of the season as the Addicks were promoted and the Blues were relegated. Wes Saunders bagging a brace for United in the penultimate game of the campaign as Carlisle went 2-0 up by the half-hour mark.

An own-goal by Jim Tolmie that started somewhere near the halfway line and ended up in the back of the Carlisle net, began the slide to defeat though. That own goal from hell giving Charlton a stake in the game, and firing them up for an eventual 3-2 win through strikes from Mark Stuart and Mark Aizlewood.

Of United's seven home wins against the Addicks, three have been by a three goal margin, the highest scoring one of those being a 5-2 victory in the old Division Two in 1971-72. The Carlisle goals, in front of 9,724 spectators, coming through a Bobby Owen hat-trick, Bob Hatton and Chris Balderstone, while the Charlton strikes were a Tot Winstanley own goal and a finish from the slightly amusingly named Dick Plumb.

All Charlton's four wins at Brunton Park have come by a one goal margin, with the Jim Tolmie game no doubt the most well remembered, bar last season the other two victories, with one of them coming in the League Cup, both being 2-1 successes in 1980-81, another campaign in which the visitors were promoted at Brunton Park near the end of the season. So the Addicks will not only be looking for their fifth win in Carlisle tomorrow but they will also be hoping to improve on a record which has seen them concede a hefty 35 goals in 17 games at Brunton Park.
