History of the Chesterfield v Carlisle United fixture
Carlisle face a trip to the recently built b2net Stadium at Chesterfield on Saturday afternoon, and have come away with little in previous meetings against the Spireites at their old Saltergate ground, having been beaten a depressing 25 out of 35 times, with the Blues only winning six and drawing four in north Derbyshire over the years, with their heaviest loss at Chesterfield twice coming via a 5-0 scoreline.
The last time the two sides met each other at Saltergate came in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern area quarter-finals in November 2009. United coming from 1-0 down to a first half Darren Currie penalty to win 3-1 in front of 2,878 spectators, thanks to goals after the interval from Matty Robson, Peter Murphy and Adam Clayton.
Last time out in the league, in League One in the 2006-07 campaign, the teams drew 0-0 as 4,525 fans looked on inside Saltergate on the second league matchday of the season. Carlisle have twice won by a two goal margin at Chesterfield, 3-1 in the Third Division North in 1957-58 and by the same scoreline in Division Four in the 1961-62 season.
A more memorable United victory though came in Carlisle's Division Three (fourth tier) title winning season of 1994-95, United winning 2-1 partly in thanks to an outstanding goalkeeping display from Tony Elliott as the Blues pricked the automatic promotion balloon of the Spireites on the night in front of 7,283 specatators inside Saltergate, Kevin Davies scoring for the home side while David Reeves netted twice for the Cumbrians.
