History of the Colchester United v Carlisle United fixture

Carlisle travel to Essex this weekend, needing to turn around their fortunes away to Colchester, the Blues hoping to improve on a record which has seen them lose ten and win only two of the 16 games played.

The last time the two teams met in Colchester was more than a decade ago, in January 1997, when the two sides shared the spoils courtesy of a 1-1 draw in a Division Three (fourth tier) match. Owen Archdeacon bagging a 34th minute equaliser for Carlisle that Saturday, in front of 3,588 spectators, in what would turn out to be a promotion winning season for the Cumbrians.

One of United's two victories in Essex over the years was also in a promotion campaign, the time a 1-0 success on the Division Three (fourth tier) title-winning day in late April 1995 as Dean Walling scored a second-half winner with 3,333 fans looking on. Carlisle's other victory at the old Layer Road was in yet another title-winning season, this time a 1-0 win on the opening day of the 1964-65 old Division Three campaign, that man Hugh McIlmoyle scoring a first-half goal in front of 4,420 spectators.

Recent respective form guides

Colchester's disastrous home run has meant that they have managed only two draws from their last six matches at the Weston Homes Community Stadium. The U's have conceded nine goals in this period and managed to convert only three of their own chances.

The away form of Carlisle is equally dire though, collecting just one solitary draw, but five defeats, from their last six matches on the road. While the Cumbrians have scored five goals, a massive 14 have hit the back of the wrong net.

Colchester are hovering perilously just above the League One relegation zone, in 19th, with 11 points from 12 matches. Carlisle meanwhile see themselves only three points and four places higher in 15th, showing a record of 14 points from their 12 games played so far.
