Carlisle travel to Devon to take on Exeter tomorrow, needing to turn around their fortunes at St James Park. The Blues hoping to improve on a record there of four wins, seven draws and twelve defeats in 23 games.
Last season though United did get three points from a seesaw match on a January Tuesday evening. The Blues going 2-0 up in the first-half in front of 4,106 spectators thanks to a brace of goals from Joe Anyinsah, only for City to fight back late on when the late Adam Stansfield netted in the 79th minute, then Ryan Harley levelled in the final minute of the match.
The game wasn't over though and somehow Carlisle still grabbed a victory only sixty seconds later when Richard Offiong, for his only ever United goal, side-footed into an empty net after Gary Madine's initial shot had bounced back off the inside of the Grecians far-post.
You have to go back to the old Third Division in September 1979 to find Carlisle's last win at St James Park before that though, that being a 2-1 success thanks to goals from Phil Bonnyman and Paul Bannon. United's best win of their four in Devon being a 3-1 victory 20 years earlier, in September 1959, in the old Fourth Division, the Carlisle goals that day coming from a George Walker brace and Matthew Murray.
Exeter meanwhile, in 23 games against United at St James Park, have only scored three or more goals at home to Carlisle three times. Their best victory in Devon against the Blues being a 4-0 win way back in 1961-62 in the old Fourth Division, in a game watched by 3,278 fans. United though, despite that defeat, still being promoted in fourth place at the end of the season.
