Footymad preview History of the Carlisle United v Huddersfield Town fixture

Carlisle welcome Huddersfield to Cumbria tomorrow, and hold the advantage on previous meetings between the two sides at Brunton Park. Of the 26 games played, the Blues have won eleven, drawn ten and lost five against the Terriers, three of those matches coming last season in a busy campaign between the teams.

The latter of those games being a thumping 4-0 win for United in the first leg of the Northern Area Final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in mid-January 2011. Ben Marshall and Tom Taiwo putting the Cumbrians, in front of 3,706 spectators, 2-0 up at the break before second-half goals from Peter Murphy and Lubomir Michalik completed the rout.

League-wise, and two and a half weeks before that, the sides locked horns at Brunton Park on New Year's Day, with the final score being 2-2 as 5,904 fans looked on. Town going 2-0 up thanks to goals from Peter Clarke on 23 minutes and then Scott Arfield after 63 minutes, United fighting back to snatch a point late on though when Francois Zoko netted with 71 minutes gone then James Chester headed home in the 82nd minute.

Early on in the season meanwhile in the Carling Cup first round, United went down 1-0 at home to Town in front of 3,475 spectators. Jordan Rhodes scoring the only goal of the game as late as the 89th minute after Blues loanee-defender James Chester had slipped to the turf in front of the Paddock side of the ground.

As for league action in the 2009-10 campaign, the Terriers defeated the Cumbrians 2-1 on a mid-February Tuesday evening at Brunton Park with 5,236 people in attendance. Lee Novak opening the scoring in only the sixth minute before Jordan Rhodes made it 2-0 to the visitors after 56 minutes. Joe Anyinsah's 90th minute strike therefore proving to be nothing more than a consolation goal for the Blues.

Just over three years ago though in League One Carlisle, on Boxing Day 2008, picked up their best ever Brunton Park league victory over Huddersfield as they defeated the Terriers 3-0. Danny Graham in the first-half, then Michael Bridges and Graham Kavanagh after the break scoring the goals for the Blues in front of 7,883 spectators.

Other games between the two clubs have otherwise been relatively tight affairs, and with that in mind, United's third biggest league win over the Terriers has five times been by the scoreline of two goals to nil. Perhaps the most memorable of those matches being the Football League Trophy Northern Section semi-final second leg game at Brunton Park in the 1993-94 season when the Cumbrians just came up short as they attempted to overturn a 4-1 deficit from the first leg at Leeds Road.

The best of Town's five successes on the road at the home of United came in the 1969-70 campaign in the old Division Two. Huddersfield winning 2-0 with goals from Jimmy Nicholson and Colin Dobson in either half that early October afternoon as 9,721 fans looked on, the Terriers doing the double over the Blues that season on the way to winning the title. Carlisle did gain a modicum of revenge in the League Cup second round that year though when they defeated Town 2-0 at home thanks to a brace of goals from Hughie McIlmoyle in front of 11,198 spectators, United eventually making it all the way to the semi-final stage before succumbing to West Brom.
