History of the Carlisle United v Leeds United fixture

Carlisle welcome Leeds United to Cumbria this weekend needing to improve on a poor record between the sides over the years. The visitors have won three of the six previous games, with the Cumbrians winning just one.

The last time the two teams met at Brunton Park was over twenty years ago, in November 1985, with Leeds winning 2-1 in a match contested in the old Division Two. Paul Baker scoring Carlisle's only goal in that defeat in front of just 3,504 spectators.

Leeds saw the best win of their three at Brunton Park come in the third round of the FA Cup way back in the 1949-50, the Whites triumphing 5-2 as a bumper crowd of 22,832 fans looked on. John Lindsay and George Dick grabbing the two goals for the Cumbrians that day.

As already mentioned Carlisle have only won once in six attempts at home to Leeds, that victory occuring in the old Division Two campaign of 1983-84. Malcolm Poskett scoring the only goal of the game in the second-half to guide the Blues to a 1-0 win in front of 6,845 spectators.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle have lost just once in their last six home games, winning four and drawing the other one. These high-scoring games have yielded a total of twelve goals for the Cumbrians, with only four goals against.

The away form of Leeds is equally impressive, tasting just one defeat in their last six (at Portsmouth in the League Cup), and picking up four good wins. Just seven goals have been scored in these games, although to be fair only a measly four have been let in at the wrong end.

Carlisle are leading the way in the League One table, with their 13 games giving them a return of 24 points. Leeds lie just outside the play-off positions, in seventh, in the division, picking up 20 from their 13 games so far, the Elland Road outfit having been deducted 15 points at the start of the season for financial irregularities.
