History of the Carlisle United v Leeds United fixture

Carlisle play Leeds at Brunton Park tomorrow evening, looking to improve on a poor past home record against their opponents. The Blues only winning two and drawing two of the ten games contested between the sides in Cumbria.

Earlier this season Carlisle lost 3-2 at home to Leeds in the Northern Area Final second leg of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. That leaving the tie at 4-4 on aggregate with the Cumbrians then going through to Wembley by virtue of winning a thrilling penalty shootout 6-5 in front of 9,430 spectators.

Last season in League One Carlisle lost 2-0 at home to Leeds in September 2008 as 12,138 fans looked on at Brunton Park. Luciano Becchio opening the scoring for the Whites in the 31st minute before his strike partner Jermaine Beckford made sure of all three points for the visitors when he netted four minutes from time.

In the 2007-08 season in League One Carlisle defeated Leeds 3-1 at home during the regular campaign in front of 16,668 spectators. Jermaine Beckford opened the scoring for the visitors in the 27th minute before second-half goals from Simon Hackney, Joe Garner and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson sealed all three points for the Blues.

In the end-of-season promotion play-offs Leeds got their revenge though when they turned around a 2-1 deficit from the first leg to win 2-0 at Brunton Park and thus progress to Wembley 3-2 on aggregate. Jonny Howson scoring both goals for the visitors that day in the 10th minute and then in injury time as 12,873 spectators looked on.

Bar November 2007, Carlisle's only other win in ten attempts at home to the Elland Road club occured in the old Division Two season of 1983-84. Malcolm Poskett scoring the only goal of the game in the second-half to guide the Blues to a 1-0 win in front of 6,845 spectators.

Leeds saw the best win of their six at Brunton Park come in the third round of the FA Cup way back in the 1949-50 season, the Whites triumphing 5-2 as a bumper crowd of 22,832 fans looked on. John Lindsay and George Dick grabbing the two goals for the Cumbrians that day.
