History of the Leyton Orient v Carlisle United fixture

Carlisle visit the O's hoping to improve on a poor return over the years. The Cumbrians hoping to pick up on a record which has seen them lose ten and win only three of the 19 games between the two sides at the Matchroom Stadium.

Last season in League One though United put in perhaps their best away performance of the season to win 3-0 at Leyton Orient. The goals, in front of 6,134 spectators, coming from Danny Graham, and then a couple of unlikely sources in David Raven and Grant Smith.

The biggest win for the O's on home soil against the Blues came in the 1987-88 season when they defeated Carlisle 4-1 in the old Fourth Division. United's only goal that day, at what was then Brisbane Road, was scored by Bobby Hutchinson in front of 2,861 fans in a terrible campaign that only saw the Cumbrians saved from relegation to the GM Vauxhall Conference by the financial demise of Newport County.

Apart from that excellent victory last season, Carlisle's meagre two wins at Orient have both been by 1-0 scorelines. The first victory coming in the 1973-74 season in the old Division Two with a goal in the opening 45 minutes from Dennis Martin as 7,645 spectators looked on, the Blues eventually pipping Orient to promotion to the top tier of English football by just one point come the end of the campaign.

The second win happened 25 years later in the 1999-2000 season when Matthew Pitts secured all three points in the 83rd minute in front of 3,871 fans, in another campiagn of that era which saw the Cumbrians escape relegation by the skin of their teeth.

Recent respective form guides

Orient have performed averagely at home in their last six games at the Matchroom Stadium, the O's winning three, drawing one and losing two of those matches. Orient having scored eight goals in these games while conceding an alarming nine.

The Blues have had a decent run of form away from home in their last six matches, coming away with three points on three occasions, but drawing one and losing two. Carlisle's goal record exactly the same at Orient's at eight goals scored and nine conceded.

Orient have started off their season with a 2-1 league win at home to Hereford followed by two away defeats, 4-1 at Ipswich in the Carling Cup and 3-0 against Peterborough in the league. Carlisle meanwhile are looking for their fourth win in a row after defeating Bristol Rovers on the road in the league 3-2, winning 1-0 at Shrewsbury in the Carling Cup and claiming a 4-2 victory at home to Crewe last weekend.
