History of the Norwich City v Carlisle United fixture

Carlisle travel to Norfolk on Saturday afternoon, looking to break their duck against the hosts. The Cumbrians having lost on ten of their eleven visits to Carrow Road, while managing a draw in the other game.

The last time the two teams met before this season was back in September 1992 in the first leg of a Coca-Cola cup second round tie at Brunton Park, the game finishing 2-2 in front of 10,328 spectators with Andy Barnsley (pen) and Darren Edmondson scoring for United while Mark Robins and Jeremy Goss were on target for the visitors. The Blues then losing the second leg 2-0 at Carrow Road two weeks later as Chris Sutton bagged a brace while only 8,489 fans looked on.

As for league action in Norwich, well that last came in Carlisle's Division Two relegation season of 1985-86, City winning 2-1 thanks to a brace of goals from David Williams, one of them coming from the penalty spot. United's single effort meanwhile was scored by Scott McGarvey in front of 13,852 spectators.

The Canaries got their biggest win over the Cumbrians at Carrow Road in the second leg of a third round League Cup tie back in 1962-63, United losing 5-0 after drawing the opening game of the tie 1-1 at Brunton Park. On the subject of draws, Carlisle's only ever league point in Norwich came in the old Division Two in 1970-71, the score again being 1-1 with Bob Hatton netting for the Blues while Trevor Howard bagged the City goal as 11,389 spectators looked on.
