History of the Plymouth Argyle v Carlisle United fixture

Carlisle travel to Devon this weekend looking to improve on relatively poor form in their previous meetings at Home Park, United having won three, drawn one and lost eleven of the fifteen games played over the years.

Last time the teams met was back in the 2001-02 season in the fourth tier of the Football League, a campaign in which won Plymouth won the title with a massive 102 points. One of Argyle's 31 victories coming in late November when they defeated Carlisle 3-0 in front of 5,870 spectators, thanks to goals from Micky Evans, Jason Bent and Martin Phillips.

That three goal margin of victory is Plymouth's best size of succes over United at Home Park, with them also winning 4-1 in the old Division Three in 1980-81. As for Carlisle, all their three wins in Devon have been by one goal, 2-1 in 1966-67, 1-0 in 1976-77 and then 1-0 again the following season. That 1977-78 victory coming through a first-half Jimmy Hamilton goal as 4,744 fans looked on.

Recent respective form guides

Plymouth's home form is dire at the moment, collecting just one solitary point from their last six league games at Home Park. The Pilgrims having conceded a hefty nine goals in this period, while managing to convert just one of their own chances.

Carlisle's away form is pretty average at the moment, with two wins, two draws, and two defeats in their last six matches away from Brunton Park. The Cumbrians have a narrow positive goal difference over these games, with eight goals for and seven against.

Both sides won their opening fixture of the 2010-11 League One campaign last week, with Argyle picking up an excellent 1-0 win at Southampton, while the Blues easily defeated Brentford 2-0 at home.
