History of the Carlisle United v Portsmouth fixture
Carlisle are ready to welcome a troubled Portsmouth to Brunton Park on Saturday afternoon, looking to continue an impressive record. The Cumbrians are clearly on top, having won nine, drawn five and lost only three of the previous 17 games contested between the two sides in Cumbria.
Last time out came one of the three defeats though as United, in September 2009, went down 3-1 in front of 7,042 spectators in a second round Carling Cup tie. The Cumbrians taking the lead though through a fourth minute Ian Harte penalty, only for then Premier League Pompey to fight back and win thanks to goals from Aruna Dindane in the 26th minute, Danny Webber on 33 minutes, and then Anthony Vanden Borre with 63 minutes on the clock.
You have to go back to the 1985-86 season to find the last league game between the teams at Brunton Park however, Portsmouth also winning that match, this time 1-0 in the old Second Division on the last Sunday before Christmas as just 4,225 fans watched Mick Channon score the only goal of the game for the visitors in the second-half.
Portsmouth's only other win away to Carlisle meanwhile came again in the old Second Division, but this time in the 1973-74 campaign thanks, in mid-September to goals from Ray Hiron and Ron Davies in front of 6,416 spectators. Finally, United's biggest of their nine wins at home to Pompey was a 6-0 Second Division thrashing in 1970-71, the Blues goals coming virtue of Bob Hatton netting a bumper four, while Bobby Owen also managed a brace as 7,540 fans looked on.

Recent respective form guides
Carlisle have performed reasonably at home at the end of last season and the start of this, winning three, drawing one and losing two of their last six games at Brunton Park. The goals for column just outweighs the goals against over this period, at seven to six. Portsmouth meanwhile have a poor recent record on the road in the last five months, seeing them win just one, draw two and lose three of their last six matches away from Fratton Park. While Pompey have notched up eight goals in those games, 14 have hit the back of the wrong net.
After two games of the current League One season Carlisle are in 21st place and stuck down in the relegation zone with a return of just one point from their two games played thus far. On the other hand Portsmouth's two points earnt from their two matches contested to date sees them lie just inside the top half of the table, in 12th position.
