History of the Carlisle United v Sheffield Wednesday fixture

Carlisle welcome the Owls to Cumbria on Saturday afternoon, and hold the advantage on previous meetings between the two teams at Brunton Park. United winning six, drawing five and losing three of the 14 games played over the years.

Earlier this season in the Northern Area Semi-Final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy the Blues defeated Wednesday 3-1 at home in late November. Francois Zoko on the half-hour mark, then Lubomir Michalik and Ben Marshall on 62 and 69 minutes respectively putting United 3-0 up as 3,149 fans looked on, before Darren Purse's 85th minute consolation goal for the visitors.

The last fixture before that in Cumbria came in the 2003-04 season in the only time before that the clubs have played each other in the Associate Members Trophy. The Owls winning easily 3-0, to gain their biggest historical victory at Brunton Park, in the Northern Section Quarter-Finals thanks to goals from Mark Robins (2) and Graeme Lee in front of 2,869 spectators.

League-wise you have go back to 1983-84 and the old Second Division for a game, the sides drawing 1-1 on New Year's Eve at Brunton Park as 10,475 fans looked on, with Don O'Riordan scoring for Carlisle, while current Owls boss Gary Megson netted for the visitors.

United's biggest win at home to Wednesday actually came in the second round of the 1971-72 League Cup, the Blues winning 5-0 on an early September Tuesday evening in front of 10,338 spectators. Bob Hatton and Dennis Martin both getting a brace of goals for the Blues, while Frank Barton also weighed in with a single strike.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle have collected two wins, three draws and one defeat from their last six home matches. A hefty total of 15 goals have been scored by the Cumbrians in those games, but nine have also been conceded.

Meanwhile, the away form of Sheffield Wednesday is pretty dire, collecting just one solitary point from their last six matches on the road. While the Owls have scored just goals in those matches, a massive 17 have hit the back of the wrong net.

Carlisle's 42 points picked up from their 30 games contested to date sees them lie just inside the top half of the table, in 12th position. Sheffield Wednesday on the other hand find themselves struggling down in 16th place in the League One table having gained 37 points from their 30 matches played so far.
