History of the Carlisle United v Shrewsbury Town fixture

United welcome Town to Cumbria on Tuesday, and hold the advantage on previous meetings between the two. Of the twenty games played the Cumbrians have recorded ten wins and the Shrews have come away with four victories.

The previous match played between the two at Brunton Park was almost exactly three years ago in late February 2003. That night Carlisle carved out a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg of their LDV Trophy Northern Area Final against the Shropshire outfit, Adam Rundle bagging a 23rd minute goal to set the Cumbrians on the road to the Millennium Stadium. The last league game between the Blues and the Shrews in Cumbria was four months earlier in October 2002. United crashed 2-1 to Town on that ocassion, a second-half Matt Redmile own goal cancelling out a first minute Shrews effort from Karl Murray, David Artell then netting in the 78th minute to claim all three points for the Salopians in front of a paltry crowd of 3484.

Recent respective form guides

United are in excellent form at home, having won four and drawn two of their last six games. During these games Carlisle have smashed 14 goals past the opposition and have only conceded three at the wrong end.

In complete contrast to the Blues, the Shrews are having a torrid time on their travels, chalking up just one victory, with five defeats, from their last six away games. Only five goals have been registered in this time, with seven leaked at the wrong end, the only win being a 3-0 success at struggling Oxford United back on the 7th of January.

United are currently occupying second spot in the league two table, gaining 55 points from their 32 games to date. The Blues are sitting only two points ahead of fourth placed Northampton Town though and will be hoping for a home win double this week, against two sides in the bottom half of the table, in order to keep their automatic promotion hopes on track.

Town see themselves just below half way in the table in 14th place, showing a record of 40 points from their 32 games played so far. The Salopians are having an up and down season and have spent the majority of the campaign in the mid-table spots, only reaching as high as eighth in late September after a 2-0 win at Peterborough United.
