Carlisle play host to Southampton tomorrow afternoon, aiming to maintain a near-perfect record against their opponents. The Cumbrians having claimed victory from four of the five games played at Brunton Park against the Saints.
The last time the two teams met in Cumbria was back in early October 1983 at a time when the second round of the League Cup was played over two legs. United going out of the competition despite winning the opener at home 2-0 thanks to a Malcolm Poskett brace in front of 8,570 spectators, the Blues though then going on to lose the second leg at the Dell 3-0 after extra-time three weeks later.
While Carlisle have gained their other three victories at home to the Saints by a one-goal margin, that goal difference is completely wiped out and one more by Southampton's only ever win at Brunton Park, that being a 6-0 hammering of United in the old second division in January 1977. The game, watched by 9,617 fans, seeing the goals for the Saints scored by Nick Holmes (2), Peter Osgood, David Peach (pen), Ted MacDougall and Mick Channon.

Recent respective form guides
Carlisle's present home form is poor, winning just two of their last six matches at Brunton Park and losing the other four. While Cumbrians the have scored six goals in those games, a worringly large nine have been leaked at the other end.
The away form of Southampton is pretty dire though, the Saints managing just a paltry two draws from their last six matches on the road and having not won away from St Mary's since March the 3rd of this year. While the Saints have hit only four goals, a bumper eleven have hit the back of the wrong net.
Carlisle find themselves struggling down in 17th position in the League One table having picked up eight points from their eight matches contested to date. Southampton meanwhile, somewhat unsurprisingly taking into account their ten point deduction for entering administration near the end of last season, find themselves stuck right at the bottom of the division, their 8 games so far having yielded them eight points, which in reality equates to minus two points.
