Carlisle welcome the Shrimpers to Cumbria tomorrow, looking to continue an impressive home record against the visitors. United winning eight and losing only two of the 13 games played between the two sides.
The last time the teams met at Brunton Park was in March 2004, with Southend inflicting a narrow 2-1 defeat on the Cumbrians in a Division Three (fourth tier) match. That loss was Carlisle's first home defeat in almost fourth months in a season where our luck finally ran out and we were relegated to the Nationwide Conference.
Leon Constantine bagging a double for the Shrimpers on 50 and 77 minutes, in front of 6,173 spectators, before Craig Farrell's 87th minute consolation strike for United. Meanwhile Southend's only other win at Brunton Park was again by a 2-1 scoreline, that game being in the old Third Division in 1962-63.
Carlisle's biggest win at home to Southend was a thumping 5-0 victory at the same level we find ourselves at now, back in the 1997-98 campaign. The goals that early January afternoon, as 5,389 fans looked on, coming from Matt Jansen (2), Nicky Wright, Ian Stevens and Ronnie Wallwork. That game coming only four days after the Blues had hammered Rochdale 6-1 at home in a Football League Trophy tie.
