Carlisle visit Stockport tomorrow needing to change their fortunes at Edgeley Park. The Cumbrians hoping to improve on a record which has seen them lose 23, draw seven and win only nine of the 39 games played in Stockport.
Last season in League One County defeated United easily 3-0 on Saturday the 1st of November in what would prove to be Blues boss John Ward's last game as Carlisle manager before he was sacked two days later. A Carl Baker brace and a single strike from Stephen Gleeson condeming the Cumbrians to their ninth league defeat in ten games as 6,301 fans looked on.
One match Blues fans will want to remember at Edgeley Park though was in May 2006 when a 0-0 draw, in front of just over 10,000 spectators, was a good result for both teams. The point apiece, in then United boss Paul Simpson's last game as a player, meaning that on the final day of that League Two season Carlisle's status as champions was confirmed while Stockport made sure of avoiding relegation into non-league football.
The Hatters have given the Blues a few hammerings at Edgeley Park over the years, including a 7-1 win in 1929-30, and worst of all an 8-1 hammering in 1955-56. The best of Carlisle's nine victories at Edgeley Park was a 3-0 win in the old Fourth Division in 1963-64, the goalscorers being Ron Thompson, Hughie McIlmoyle and Johnny Evans, with all eight of United's other successes being by a narrow one-goal margin.
