History of the Carlisle United v Tranmere Rovers fixture

The Blues welcome the Whites this weekend holding a slight advantage on previous meetings in Cumbria. The 34 games played showing United having won 16, Tranmere having won nine, and there have been nine draws.

Rovers have been victorious in their last two games at Brunton Park though, the 2008-09 season seeing them defeat the Blues 2-1 in front of 6,093 spectators. Ian Moore, or Ian Thomas-Moore these days, opened the scoring as early as the first minute for the visitors, with Ryan Shotton then making it 2-0 on 80 minutes, Danny Graham's last minute strike for the Cumbrians therefore being no more than a consolation goal.

The time before that in League One Rovers condemned Carlisle to their first defeat of the 2007-08 league campaign, five games in, and then under the tutelage of caretaker manager Greg Abbott. The only goal of the match scored by Tranmere youngster Craig Curran in the 42nd minute as 6,556 spectators looked on inside Brunton Park.

Carlisle's biggest win over Rovers came in the 1952-53 Third Division North as they won 4-0 with goals from Jimmy Whitehouse, Ian Atkinson, Robert Harrison and Alan Ashman. Rovers' biggest win at Brunton Park came courtesy of two 3-0 scorelines, one in the Fourth Division in 1961-62 and the other in Division Three North in 1955-56.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle are not in the greatest form at home as of late, with two wins, two draws, and two defeats in their last six matches at Brunton Park, six goals have been both scored and conceded in this period.

Tranmere have at best an average recent record on the road, seeing them win just one and draw two of their last six outings away from Prenton Park. Rovers have conceded a bumper nine goals in these games, and only hit three in reply.

Carlisle find themselves struggling down in 16th position in the League One table at this early stage of the season having picked up five points from their five matches played so far. Tranmere are worse off though as they are stuck down in the relegation zone, in 22nd, with a return of just three points from their five games contested to date.
