History of the Carlisle United v Tranmere Rovers fixture

The Blues welcome the Whites this weekend holding a good advantage on previous meetings in Cumbria. The 35 games played showing United having won 17, Tranmere having won nine, and there have been nine draws.

Last season in League One Carlisle continuing that record with a 3-0 victory in early September 2009 as 5,269 fans looked on. The United goals all coming in an 18 minute spell from just before the hour-mark onwards, with Joe Anyinsah, Danny Livesey and Ian Harte all getting themselves on the Blues scoresheet.

Rovers have been victorious in their last two games before that at Brunton Park though, the 2008-09 season seeing them defeat the Blues 2-1 in front of 6,093 spectators. Ian Moore, or Ian Thomas-Moore these days, opened the scoring as early as the first minute for the visitors, with Ryan Shotton then making it 2-0 on 80 minutes, Danny Graham's last minute strike for the Cumbrians therefore being no more than a consolation goal.

The time before that in League One Rovers condemned Carlisle to their first defeat of the 2007-08 league campaign, five games in, and then under the tutelage of caretaker manager Greg Abbott. The only goal of the match scored by Tranmere striker, and current Blues frontman Craig Curran in the 42nd minute as 6,556 spectators looked on inside Brunton Park.

Carlisle's biggest win over Rovers came in the 1952-53 Third Division North as they won 4-0 with goals from Jimmy Whitehouse, Ian Atkinson, Robert Harrison and Alan Ashman. Rovers' biggest win at Brunton Park came courtesy of two 3-0 scorelines, one in the Fourth Division in 1961-62 and the other in Division Three North in 1955-56.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle have only collected one win, three draws and two defeats from their last six home games played. The Cumbrians have scored six goals in these matches, but on the other side of the coin have conceded seven.

Tranmere's away form is none too clever either, picking up two good wins, one draw but losing three, from their last six matches on the road. The Rovers have scored a healthy nine goals in these games, but have also conceded an alarming eleven.

Carlisle's 20 points from 14 games played sees them lie inside the top half of the League One table, in tenth position. Tranmere meanwhile are hovering perilously just above the relegation zone on goal difference, in 20th, after picking up 16 points from their 14 matches contested to date.

FootyMad's prediction ...

It's been a poor show from Carlisle at home in recent games, and, though the Footymad panel cannot see a run starting here, they do think the Cumbrians will at least gain a draw. No-score draw
