History of the Carlisle United v Walsall fixture

The Blues welcome the Saddlers to Cumbria tomorrow holding the advantage on previous meetings between the two teams at Brunton Park. Of the 22 games played Carlisle have won eleven while Walsall have been victorious four times.

Last season in League One United defeated Walsall 2-1 at home on a Saturday afternoon in early February in front of 6,220 spectators. The Saddlers taking a 23rd minute lead through Lee Holmes, only for a Marc Bridge-Wilkinson penalty ten minutes later and a 75th minute header from Danny Graham to secure all three points for the Blues.

Walsall's biggest win at Carlisle over the years was a 6-1 thumping of the Blues way back in the Third Division North in 1934-35, United's sole goalscorer that day being John Ranson as 2,907 fans looked on.

You have to go a long way back as well to find Carlisle's largest margin of victory over the Saddlers at Brunton Park, that coming, again in Division Three North, in 1931-32. The goalscorers, in a 4-0 win, being Jimmy McConnell with a brace, and Jack Davidson and Arthur Sharp with single strikes in front of 3,678 spectators.

Recent respective form guides

Carlisle have had an average home run of late, winning and losing three each of their last six games at Brunton Park. A generous eight goals have been both scored and conceded in this period.

Meanwhile the away form of Walsall is pretty dire, managing a paltry two draws from their last six matches on the road. While the Saddlers have scored a reasonable six goals, a bumper ten have hit the back of the wrong net.

Carlisle find themselves struggling down in 18th position in the league having picked up 32 points from their 28 matches played. Meanwhile Walsall's 36 points from 29 games contested sees them lie just inside the top half of the League One table, in 12th place.
