History of the Yeovil Town v Carlisle United fixture

The Blues pack their bags to visit Somerset and the Glovers this weekend, looking to improve on the 3-0 defeat they were on the end of the only other time they have played at Huish Park.

That meeting was almost exactly three years ago, in mid-August 2003, and was Carlisle's third loss in a row at the start of a dire season that resulted in relegation from Division Three to the Conference. Ironically enough Kevin Gall was the Cumbrians chief destroyer that day with his lightning pace, the now United man scoring twice within the first eighteen minutes to leave the Blues with a mountain to climb right from the off. Only a standout performance by Carlisle keeper Matty Glennon stopped the game being a cricket score win for the home side, Kirk Jackson grabbing the only other goal of the game after 79 minutes to seal the 3-0 win for the Glovers.

The Blues were shown a bumper six bookings in the match by referee Mike Thorpe from Suffolk, and the day wasn't much better for the travelling United fans either who missed the kick-off due to horrendous holiday traffic jams on the M5. Carlisle, in a better run of form, won the return game 2-0 at Brunton Park in January 2004 with goals in either half from Paul Simpson and Craig Farrell in front of a crowd of 5,455 spectators. The damage was already done though after a disastrous first half to the campaign for the Cumbrians, the season culminating in relegation for United, while the Glovers just missed out on the promotion play-offs on goal difference.

Recent respective form guides

Yeovil have collected two wins and 3 draws from their last six home matches. A total of nine goals have been scored by the Glovers in those games, with six conceded, although a lot of those goal on either side came in a 4-3 win for Town over Gillingham at the end of April.

Carlisle have had a decent run of form away from home recently, unbeaten in the last six, but with four of them resulting in draws. The Cumbrians have managed to tuck away nine goals in this period, and have conceded just the two in an excellent defensive run away from Brunton Park.

Yeovil find themselves in 15th in the League One table having drawn their first two games, 1-1 at Millwall and 0-0 at home to Bournemouth. Carlisle lie just outside the play-off positions at this early stage of the season, after beating Doncaster 1-0 at Brunton Park and drawing 0-0 with Chesterfield at Saltergate.
