Admin blunder costs Soley one-game ban

Soley served a "phantom" suspension against Darlo
Midfielder Steve Soley will miss Tuesday night's home game with Southend United due to a one-match suspension, even though he has already sat out a game last month against Darlington for the same reason.

Soley was told he was suspended for the Darlo game because he had reached five yellow cards. In fact he had only been booked four times and should have been eligible for a game that United lost 3-1 - their only defeat since Christmas.

Now a furious Soley will have to sit out another game because the yellow he collected against Torquay 11 days ago really WAS his fifth of the season. The Football League will not allow his ban to be served retrospectively so Soley will be sitting in the stand on Tuesday night.

United are virtually safe from relegation but manager Roddy Collins will be upset that a key member of his side was left out because of an administrative blunder. It is not clear who was to blame for the misunderstanding.

Earlier this season United were involved in another embarrassing episode when they incorrectly fielded Sean Friars in a league fixture when he wasn't registered to play. A points deduction looked likely but the Cumbrians escaped with a fine of £25,000.

Soley is in the team for today's trip to Lincoln City but skipper Stuart Whitehead is ruled out through suspension. Tony Hopper and Michael Jack are the likely candidates to take his place in midfield.

Richie Foran will join Soley on the sidelines on Tuesday when he starts a two-match ban. Ian Stevens is almost certain to partner Steve Halliday up front in those two fixtures but he may have to accept a place on the bench this afternoon.
