Defensive problems for Cumbrians

United go into today's crucial away game at the Racecourse Ground against Wrexham with major defensive headaches.

Centre half Darren Kelly starts a three-game suspension and Paul Raven is out injured for the rest of the season. Peter Murphy felt his hamstring against Rushden on Saturday and if he is also ruled out, Lee Andrews may have to come back into the side to partner Mark Birch in a make-do-and-mend arrangement. Roddy Collins could also play Will McDonagh at the back. McDonagh began his career as a centre-half in Ireland.

The good news is that striker Richie Foran returns after a two-match ban and he is expected to start the game although Collins has the option of playing five in midfield and putting Craig Farrell up front as a lone targetman.

Wrexham are in good form and moved four points clear of Bournemouth in the third automatic promotion spot on Saturday thanks to a 2-0 away win at Kidderminster. In-form Lee Trundle grabbed both goals and he will be one to watch for Carlisle's patched-up rearguard today.

The Cumbrians slipped to 22nd position after the defeat to Rushden, still 2 points clear of second-bottom Shrewsbury who lost for the third game running at home to Boston. The two sides meet in what could be a relegation decider at Gay Meadow on April 29. In today's other relegation matches, Boston are at home to Southend, Bristol Rovers travel to Oxford, Swansea host Exeter in a six-pointer at Vetch Field and Shrewsbury are away at fourth-placed Bournemouth.
