Long-haul trips in store after draw

Chief among the demanding expeditions will be Sky Bet League Two club Exeter's 360-mile journey to face Barclays Premier League side Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, while south-coast outfit Bournemouth must trek 340 miles north to reach fourth-tier Hartlepool.

Northampton supporters will spend around four hours on the motorways heading to Newcastle for a tie to be played in the week commencing August 24, and Keith Curle's Carlisle are heading south to tackle Championship side QPR.

Curle, formerly an assistant manager to Neil Warnock at Loftus Road, remembers his time in west London fondly, telling the Cumbrians' official website: "We managed to halt the slide towards relegation before we could then begin the difficult task of turning things round.

"We set about creating a winning mentality, in a very similar way to what I am trying to do here at Carlisle at the moment, and we went on a run which took us into the Premier League as champions of the division.

"It's a trip I'm looking forward to but, and let's make no mistake, we have some very important league business to attend to over the course of the next few weeks."

Everton's latest quest to win the League Cup for the first time in their history will begin at Barnsley after the draw sent the Toffees to Oakwell.

Should England defender John Stones resist the overtures of Chelsea and remain with the Merseysiders before the transfer window closes, the cup clash will see him make his first return to his hometown club, whom Everton have not faced in a competitive game since February 1998.

Stoke are meeting League Two opposition when they visit Luton while 2013 winners Swansea welcome York to the Liberty Stadium.

Recently-promoted Watford head to Preston as Championship play-off final winners Norwich renew their acquaintance with second-tier Rotherham when pitching up at Carrow Road

Of the other top-flight clubs not participating in Europe and therefore entering the draw at this stage, Aston Villa will welcome Notts County while Crystal Palace host Shrewsbury at Selhurst Park and three-time winners Leicester visit Bury.

West Brom, who have not won the trophy since 1966, go head-to-head with Port Vale at the Hawthorns.

Doncaster won a penalty shoot-out against Leeds last night to book a home meeting with Ipswich in the second round, where Walsall are paired with Brighton, Sheffield Wednesday play Oxford and Portsmouth pit their wits against Reading.

Elsewhere, last season's semi-finalists Sheffield United visit Fulham, MK Dons host Cardiff and Hull tackle Rochdale

Peterborough face Charlton, Gillingham go to Birmingham, Wolves entertain Barnet and Burton can expect a bumper crowd when Aitor Karanka's Middlesbrough come to town.
