Stefan Scougall will step up his Carlisle United comeback this week ahead of a possible return to the squad next Saturday.

The midfielder has been out for a month with a hamstring injury.

But the 26-year-old is close to being available again.

He will report for training in the early stages of this week whilst most of his team-mates are given days off.

Manager Steven Pressley said: “He’ll be in on Tuesday working with Dolly [Neil Dalton], our physio, and will join in full training on Thursday.

“His involvement might be there [at Newport next Saturday]; maybe not from the start, but we’re certainly thinking about him in the group.

“Jack Bridge also comes back into the equation next week [after suspension], which is pleasing.”

Pressley said his staff and players are being given some time off this week – something the manager introduces at the end of every six-week “cycle”.

They will return to Brunton Park later in the week to prepare for the Newport trip.

“It’s a switch-off week,” Pressley said. “It’s something we planned in the schedule that we’ve had before.

“Everyone will go away, I’ll finally get home to see my family, and we’re all looking forward to that.

“It’s been a hectic period again. The players have worked hard to deserve this.”
