Carlisle United have today signed Liverpool keeper Shamal George on a half-season loan deal which keeps him at Brunton Park until the beginning of the January 2018 transfer window.

Shamal, 19, has been with the Reds since 2009 having been spotted by the Premier League outfit when he was playing for local side Manor FC.

He travelled with Jurgen Klopp and his first team squad on their tour of the USA in the summer of 2016 and was famously used as a striker by the Reds’ manager in a friendly fixture against Huddersfield Town that same year.

United’s keeper coach Simon Tracey said: “He’s a player I’ve monitored since he was 17-years-old and he’s a real prospect.

“He has key attributes which the manager likes and that’s important. He’s comfortable with the ball, he has a real presence and he’s a good communicator.

“He can deal with the ball with both feet and it’s no surprise to anyone that he’s very highly thought of by his parent club.

“The grounding they’ve given him has put him in a good place in terms of where his career can go and this will be a fantastic experience for him which will be of benefit to all parties concerned.

“He’s going to be in a competitive and demanding first team environment and we think he has the character and temperament which will relish the challenge that throws up.

“We’re all looking forward to working with him and we can see him being real competition for Jack [Bonham] for that starting place.”

This loan deal remains subject to the clearance of all relevant paperwork.
