Liam O’Neil and Paul Lewis could be in contention for places in the Cambridge United squad for their home clash with Carlisle United in Sky Bet League Two this Saturday (February 29).
The midfield duo were both forced off with hamstring strains in the 0-0 draw at Plymouth Argyle last week, with Lewis making way in the 37th minute and O’Neil after 51 minutes.
But there are brighter prospects for the pair.
“We’re less concerned by the boys that were injured and came off the pitch than perhaps we were at full time,” said interim head coach Mark Bonner.
“We’re not guaranteeing that they’re unavailable for this weekend at the moment so we will just see how the next couple of days go.
“The lack of training today [Thursday] may have a bit of an impact on that, but Liam and Paul are both fit boys who have done ever so well in recent weeks so we want them available as early as possible.
“The weekend may come too soon but we’re not counting them out at the moment.”
Ben Coker is in full training and the same is true of Sam Smith, who is stepping up his recovery from illness.
“He (Smith) has recovered well, it just takes time, said Bonner. “He lost a lot of weight - he might get blown over if the winds are too strong!
“He’s just got to build himself back up but we know Sam, he’s had a really good season for us, done well and as soon as he is fit, flying and ready to go he will make that forward line even stronger.”
Bonner added: “We’re getting close to a really strong batch of players to pick from.”
