Valiants defender Gareth Owen spoke to BBC Radio Stoke ahead of his side's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie against Carlisle at Brunton Park tonight, Owen first looking back on Vale's first away league defeat of the season on Saturday :

" We are still top of the league, we have got another tough week to come and it doesn't get any easier in this league, you have to stand up and be counted every single week. We know where we went wrong against Oxford and we will be going out to put that right next week. We didn't get too high when we were winning and we won't get too deflated when we lose. It was probably the kick up the backside we needed and we'll come out this week, take our medicine, work hard and try to put things right.

" Carlisle is never an easy place to go is it, but we know where we went wrong, so we will go out there on Tuesday and give it a good crack and see what happens. It is a game of football and you want to win any game of football, just because the gaffer (Micky Adams) is making changes, he is making changes because the lads on the touchline deserve a chance.

" So, he is going to make changes and it is up to the lads who get that shirt to put a performance in and then they could be in charge of it on Saturday as well. You'll go through a season losing games and we'll work hard in training this week. Then we'll be working hard on Thursday and Friday before the league game against Hereford. "

While striker, and one time United target Marc Richards told The Sentinel :

" I back the decision I made (not to join Carlisle) in the summer. I explored other options because I was out of contract. But I always wanted to re-sign for Vale and I was delighted to stay. I'm settled in the area and geography was an important factor because I've got two children and the move would have meant uprooting my family. And the fact Micky Adams is our manager, I felt we could be promotion contenders. "

And midfielder Rob Taylor commented to The Sentinel :

" It's been a frustrating time, but the team has been doing well, so they have deserved to keep their shirts. As a squad player I want the team to do well, but any player will tell you they want to play and have a run of games. But it's up to me to show the manager I deserve a shirt when I get a chance. Tonight could be a big opportunity for me and a few other players who have been out of the team. It's a chance to show the manager what we can do against good opposition - hopefully I can grasp it and kick on from there. "
