Adam Clayton Talks About His Late Goal

Adam ClaytonFormer United loanee Adam Clayton (AC) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) after Carlisle's 3-2 defeat away to MK Dons, the current Dons midfieder talking about his last-gasp winner for the home side at stadium:mk :

JP

That must have been a strange one for you, a strange feeling scoring a goal that killed off your friends?

AC

It was very weird to be fair, because I am quite close to a lot of the people and especially the gaffer (Greg Abbott) and Kav (Graham Kavanagh) and everyone. So, I did say I wasn't going to celebrate but I think the manner of the goal coming, I think I had to give it a little run to the corner and stuff. So, unfortunately it was against Carlisle but I am just happy to get on the scoresheet and try to push MK (Dons) into the Championship.

JP

And the first thing you did when you came over to us actually, is you said sorry about scoring that goal but it is your job of course, you are an MK Dons player these days?

AC

Yeah, you have got to do it when you are on the pitch but when you are off the pitch I am sure we will have a bit of banter about it with all the lads and the management team. So, unfortunately it did come against Carlisle but for me personally it was a good thing to happen to get my MK career going, so hopefully I can get them into the Championship and see what happens.

JP

Speaking about your career, any regrets about not coming back to Carlisle United? You went to Leeds and haven't quite managed to force your way in there, although you are back with a promotion chaser in League One?

AC

I wouldn't say I have got any regrets about it, I think there was a chance of me coming back to Carlisle earlier in the season. But, I enjoyed my time greatly at Carlisle and it pushed me on as a footballer and as a person I think. So, I will always remember it and I will always have a soft spot for Carlisle. I think now that I need to get playing in the Championship as quick as I can, so I have come to a massive team in League One to try to get them into the Championship and see where my career can go.

JP

And just a year on from your time with Carlisle United, what did you make of the line-up that they have got out there? Maybe missing I am sure your friend Ben Marshall who has been a great player for them this year, but what did you make of them today?

AC

They did well today, they passed it well and they got at us and they played with a smile on their face. Under Greg and under Kav they are never going to lack enthusiasm and things like that because day to day they are brilliant around the place and things like that. So, I am sure if they can just keep that attitude that they had on Sunday in the final and the attitude they had here, they were unfortunate today with a last minute goal but if they can keep that up to the end of the season and start again next season, then maybe they can push for promotion themselves.

JP

And is it beyond the realms of possibility that maybe one day we could see you back in a Carlisle shirt?

AC

Yeah, maybe one day, I will never rule anything out, I had such a great time there. So, we will see how I progress and if it comes to it that Carlisle is the right place for me to go at that time then I am sure I won't hesitate in coming.
