Andy Hall - Radio Cumbria Interview

Last updated : 27 May 2011 By Thetashkentterror

United media officer and first team kitman Andy Hall (AH) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) ahead of Carlisle's League One at home to Leyton Orient, Hall first talking about the inclusion of Tom Taiwo in the Cumbrians starting eleven :

JP

Tom Tiddleface, Tom Taiwo, he is in the squad, that is a bit of a surprise, he really looked like he hurt something on Saturday?

AH

Yeah, he was treated immediately, good work by Dolly (Neil Dalton) which was needed because it swelled up a little bit on Saturday night. He had treatment on the bus all the way back up and he had ice treatment yesterday, he trained yesterday as well actually. But the important thing was that the swelling disappeared, so you can work with it when that happens, and he is a terrier if he is in isn't he so good luck to the lad.

JP

Five matches unchanged starting eleven, even three matches unchanged on the bench, it is real consistency coming to the end of the season when you are expecting to have one or two knocks?

AH

And is it a coincidence that the results and the performances are reflecting that, when you get a settled side and there is a bit of confidence about then why would you want to break that up? I think that is Greg Abbott's policy at the moment, we are playing well, we are winning, we want to finish as high up the table as we can. We want to do what we did against Colchester and at Rochdale for the fans, more than anything because by and large they have stuck with us this season. Yes, there have been grumbles but there always will be, it is League One football, but they have been with us every step of the way to reproduce the football that we are doing at the moment, that is just for them as well as for the lads and everybody connected with the club.

JP

It is an opinions game of course football, it is all about the fans' opinions, there has been quite a bit of debate actually between not only the fans and us but also Jon Colman and the Times and Star reporter John Fuller who is a Carlisle fan as well getting in touch, we have all been communicating about what the club should do when it comes to this point. You are not really going to make the play-offs, you are not going to go down, I am talking not necessarily just about Carlisle but clubs in general, you have got youngsters who maybe need a little bit of exposure, but then you have got a side who are winning. It is a very tricky area for a manager but Greg Abbott has stayed very true to what he has always said?

AH

Yeah, he wants to do as well as we can, you have also got to bear in mind that as an established League One club as we are now that you want to be attractive to players who are going to help it to kick on. If you do that, to help you be able to do that you finish as high up the table as you can, playing the kind of football that the players want to play who want to be involved with it, so there is that as well. He has got his players who he has brought in and he knows them better than anybody, he knows when they are going to be ready to do 90 minutes.

I don't think we would forgive him if he tried those players, they weren't ready and it shattered their confidence a little bit or it maybe knocked them back a little bit, or maybe even got the crowd, there is a good feeling at the moment, starting to get on their back because they were losing 2-0 or 3-0. So, he has got all of that to consider but most of all he wants points and he will pick the best team to do that.

JP

Because of the way the fixtures have worked out not only are you playing Yeovil twice in fairly quick proximity but Leyton Orient twice in a fortnight at the end of this season. What a great game it was as well at Leyton Orient a fortnight ago, we will hope for half that excitement and it will be a scorcher today?

AH

It was one of those where you wonder how it was 0-0, and not just from our point of view because we pretty much dominated for about 50 minutes or so I seem to remember, and they nearly nicked it at the end with the chance of the game. So, that is how it went and I have genuinely got no idea how it was 0-0 it was that good a game, hopefully we will see more of the same today with a goal or two in Carlisle United's favour.

JP

Just finally, coming up on Saturday, a rather tricky weekend, it is of course the Royal Wedding weekend, the last place that anyone would want to be is in the capital, unless you were going down to see the Royal Wedding. The last thing you would want is to be a football team with all of the different squad members etc. having to go down there, a logistical nightmare for you I would imagine?

AH

It is a worry because we are training at (Nottingham) Forest on Friday afternoon, we have to do that because it is the final important session before the game. From there how the heck do you get into London past what is going to be going on on Friday, so that is going to be an interesting one. We are thinking we are going to have to duck around the M25 and come back up the way, but we will have to wait and see. It is a concern because we have got to get there, we have got preparation time and rest times and meal times that are important to meet so my fingers are crossed along with everything else.

JP

Good luck.

AH

Thank you.
