Addicks boss Chris Powell spoke to the official Charlton website and BBC Radio London 94.9 after his side's 2-0 FA Cup second round win at home to Carlisle, Powell pleased to get to half-time with the scoreline still at 0-0 :
"I knew they would come with a strong team and I was mindful that I was going to make some changes but I had trust in the eleven that started the game and I think first period they settled into the game really well and I needed half-time to come at 0-0, which it was. But, I thought we grew with confidence and grew stronger as the game went on. Carlisle have got some good players but they may not have the depth that they would like, but I think first-half they showed that they were a decent footballing team.
"It was pleasing in the second-half for sure today for our fans and I am really happy we have progressed. You never know who we could get but also it keeps that winning mentality and the momentum going. I made a few changes but I am really happy that they all contributed to a good 2-0 win today, but I am pleased that I made those changes and that they have got a result.
"Monday evening was fantastic and it was great for us, the performance and the crowd and everyone played their part on Monday and I knew that today would be like a little bit after the Lord Mayor's Show really because we only had just under 8,000 today. But, they got behind us after a first period where Carlisle to be fair were on the front foot and put us under a bit of pressure.
"But, we sorted out one or two things at half-time, we needed to increase the tempo and just stretch Carlisle because I knew Scott Wagstaff's pace and endeavour would stretch them and getting the ball wide and getting earlier crosses in, which we did, then it would fashion chances. We had a lot of play in front of them and looking at the way they are we just needed to stretch the play. In the end Michael Morrison had two bites at it and eventually scored and then Jason Euell scored right at the end after coming on.
"I am really happy, John Sullivan came in in goal and made a real classy save at a critical time really in the game. To a man I think with all the changes we made they again excelled for us and we go to the third round now. I had to try to get the balance right, people expected me to make wholesale changes but people like Leon Cort deserve a chance, I thought he was dominant in the air and made some good challenges alongside Michael Morrison and I thought he did particularly well."
“Bradley Pritchard, Paul Hayes who started the season ever so well, and as it has developed now he has been on the bench of late. Bradley Pritchard excelled today, people like Cedric Evina who I played out of position, I felt he contributed. The subs came on Bradley (Wright-Phillips) and Yann (Kermorgant) and combined very cleverly for the second goal, and Jason Euell came on and scored and it is good for him.
“I took Danny Green off because he played on Monday and we want him to be right and ready for next week, and people like Bradley and Yann give you that fresh impetus, which they did. I only made one change in the back four, so I had strength there. Chris Solly in particular is some player, we are very happy with him, it is very rare I talk about individuals but I think teams look at him and wonder if they can get at him, but I think you are wasting your time because he is such a good one v one defender.
“He is a competitor, likes to defend but also contributes with his composure and his passing forward, and going forward as well. But, he has always needed a run in the team and for whatever reason, not fit, injured or not chosen he has never had that. But, take it from me, the way he is playing I have got no problems with my right-back whatsoever, he is just an ideal full-back, and Rhoys Wiggins on the other side is just the same.
“But, the guys that came in need a start, Scott Wagstaff, they train like trojans, they want to impress, but obviously the starting eleven the way they have been going it has been hard for me to make any changes. So, you want them to feel part of it, you want them to play at the Valley in front of our fans and get 90 minutes, every player wants that after a week's training. It is not always easy but the group have looked after themselves,
“I think the lads that have been playing have helped the players that have been on the sidelines and vice-versa. You need that if you want to progress in the league and in the cup, you need all 25-30 players, young and old, to share in all our games and our victories and that is what is happening at the moment, so it is really good.
“I wasn’t really surprised by the low crowd because it is expensive and this country isn’t in great shape financially. We had a great turnout and the support was superb on Monday, good support again, I know it is down under 8,000 but after being initially quite quiet they grew into the game and we gave them something to cheer about, I think that is what they are always looking for, but, I know our support is first class and the ones that have been here today have seen a good 2-0 win."
