Greg Abbott On The Bournemouth Win

Last updated : 21 August 2011 By Thetashkentterror

Greg AbbottUnited boss Greg Abbott (GA) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) following Carlisle's 2-1 victory at home to Bournemouth, Abbott trying to give United's second goal to Craig Curran :

JP

The first thing to clear up, who got the goals? Because, there has been some concern that we haven't even got the first one right, that was (Tom) Taiwo and we have given the second one to (Craig) Curran, what do you say?

GA

Craig Curran got all three, just to take a bit of pressure off me, Craig Curran all three. No, we looked at the screen and it looked like Tom has probably got the touch about a yard from the line for the first one, we think Craig's is a ricochet, we think it is off the goalkeeper (Darryl Flahavan), so I think it is Craig Curran, please give it to Craig Curran. We will still try to find some more strikers for everybody, but please just give it to Craig Curran.

JP

We immediately tried but every man and his dog, PA Sport and the lot telling us it came off (Nathan) Byrne and that Curran's shot wasn't actually on target, but we are trying to, we will do our best for you.

GA

Well, listen, I am not really too bothered but it would have been a bonus if it was Craig.

JP

It would have been great for him, he is down there doing his stretching off now, he has done a bit of extra running as well, he ran his heart out there today?

GA

Yeah, I mean he deserved the goal just for his......... We know what he is and what he isn't and he has worked his socks off today and to be fair the team wouldn't have got a result today if they hadn't put in that sort of endeavour. Because, it wasn't a perfect performance, we had some really good things in it and we had some poorer things in it.

It is probably synonymous of what we are right now but there was a lot of effort, there was a lot of heart and genuine honesty in the performance. To be honest I think the crowd have seen that as well today and certainly the ones behind us, they have been brilliant and they are quick to air their thoughts but today they have cheered us over the line I think and sucked the goal in for us.

JP

There were spells in the game where you did look dominant, you were passing the ball but more importantly you were closing them down, you weren't letting Bournemouth play, but then there were spells as well where you were a bit?

GA

Yeah, well we have talked about if we are going to get beat at home, like we did against Notts County then we have got to make teams hurt for the goal and work their socks off. I think Bournemouth have had to do that to get any joy in the game, and the second-half of the game did open up because both teams have put in a great deal of effort and energy. We thought we probably could have wrapped it up with a couple of chances that Rory (Loy) has had and Craig has had and young Tav (James Tavernier) who is coming onto his game again. It would have been nicer for us to go out 3-1 rather than put us through that last ten minutes.

JP

Your right-back, I know you don't want to talk too much about him but what a game he had today?

GA

Another average display, and he is not anywhere near ready for Newcastle's team so they should let us have him for a bit longer.

JP

Chris (Lumsdon) says that some fans are already calling for him to be recalled.

GA

Yeah, well, no, listen, he is a young boy learning his trade and a couple of times his passing or his crossing was a bit errant but I think overall everyone has taken to him, certainly his energy and his pace and his willingness to get forward. He has been vrey good for us and I am speaking to them after every game so again, all I will do, I always tell the truth regardless of what we joke about on here, but he has certainly been a really good acquisition after losing Frankie (Simek).

JP

Points on the board hugely important, 8th in the table hugely important but getting that first win of the season at home, how important can that be to the team?

GA

Well, we have talked about firsts haven't we, first goal for the strikers, first win at home, first win away, first clean sheet, all those things. So, yeah, after the Notts County thing is that four or five, I can't even think properly, we have gone unbeaten, four unbeaten, it is a terrific comeback, bounceback, so let's go to Leyton Orient next week and try to continue it and keep ourselves in the right part of the table.

JP

In terms of the performance today it was a tough one wasn't it because they came and at times you see why they were in the play-offs, they are obviously a bit short of a striker themselves but some of their passing and movement was something to behold today?

GA

I thought it was excellent, I thought there was some fantastic football on both sides to be honest. But, yeah, they cut us open a few times and certainly the diamond helps with that type of play but today they got into it, we had some great passing moves ourselves and when the game opened up we certainly showed that as well. So, probably as a spectacle there were some really good bits in it and some scrappy bits in it, but there was a bit of excitement and a lot of hard endeavour, a typical League One game to be honest.

JP

At half-time Carlisle the better team but they have had the better chances, what did you have to say to them?

GA

I just thought we were again it is that last third of the field that we needed to be a bit more inventive, a little bit more patient and a bit more quality with our final pass. Certainly I thought we gave the ball away a little bit in good areas for them, the last third we weren't as good as we were up to that part of the pitch. So, I said don't play with that fear, take the fear factor out, the fans will get behind you if you just give some honesty and some directness and some positive play in the last third, the crowd will work with you, and they did, they stuck with us all day today which is tremendous.

JP

In that final third as much as every team needs the goals, do you also maybe just need the ball to stay up there a bit more, do you need somebody who can maybe keep the ball up there?

GA

I think you are right, I think you are right, I think the ball came back too cheaply at times, but we need to play down the sides and play off people rather than go up in that physical confrontation because we haven't got that type of frontman in the club. So, that is down to us, we need to give better service, play the balls down the sides of people, not up against people, certainly on the deck and not in the air, and we would have better joy with the type of strikers we have got right now.

JP

After a fair few Saturday-Tuesdays-Saturday-Tuesdays, a week off now, will that be important or would you prefer the momentum at this stage?

GA

I would prefer a week off if you don't mind, absolutely prefer a week off, we have had a tough start, listen, you know how disappointed and down we were and dejected after the Notts County game. I have the job of trying to rectify that and put it right and build some belief within the town, and hopefully we have got that back now, we have rescued our pride and we can really say our season is kicking off now.

JP

Fourth game without a defeat, 8th in the division and through in the cup, I mean it doesn't look too bad all of a sudden?

GA

Where's the Fosters?

JP

I bet you need one, I will let you go off and have it.

GA

Thanks mate.
