Blues boss Greg Abbott
United boss Greg Abbott spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips after Carlisle's 3-3 pre-season friendly draw away to Bradford City, Abbott disappointed with the sloppy goals that the Blues conceded :

" We have learned quite a few things, we have learned that we can create chances, we have learned that we can score goals, it is nice to see the ball hit the back of the net. We have also learned though that we can't start games sloppy, we have to be right up in our tempo. We were poor in the set-pieces, the second goal that they scored and the other one we were sloppy, it was an easy cross to get in.

" We should have dealt with the cross and then there is a free man to smash the ball in the net and we are 2-0 down. You think that we have come here and haven't got out of the blocks quick enough, and wherever you go you will get punished and we did do.

" This (Bradford) is a good side, don't you worry about Bradford, this is a good side, it is a good club and there are some good people here and they will be right at the top end. It is a tough game, if we had to play them for real in one of the cups then you wouldn't be coming here thinking that it is a walkover. We played some terrific stuff with the ball, we were not a problem today with the ball, we created lots of chances.

" Again, back to the Hull thing where we got the ball into good areas, again I would still search for more quality from wide areas into the box. Then some of the chances that we did create were good ones, and at least today we put three away which is really, really pleasing and two of the strikers scored today.

" We have got to get Kav (Graham Kavanagh) on the ball in terms of where he can hurt people and he has hurt people today. He has hurt people with his passing range and he has hurt people with the fact that he can get on the ball and he can shoot from anything between 12 to 35 yards. People drop off him, they leave him for space and if you do that then he will find a pass or he will find a shot. Today we told him to play the game with a striker's mentality, and he scored one and could have had another couple. "

" He (Tom Taiwo) is a good little player by the way. He is one of these players that does the side of game that nobody wants to do, that is tackle, track back, fetch and carry the ball. You talk about the people like (Didier) Deschamps, (Claude) Makelele, David Batty, Roy Keane, those people of this world.

" He is an unsung hero and while you might not notice spectacular things from him, he does all the bits and pieces that I need from a midfield player to complement Paul Thirlwell's game and certainly Graham Kavanagh's. What we are trying to do is to get a bit of Billy (Bremner's) game into him in a way that he can actually do a little bit more than just the fetching and carrying because he has got ability.

" That is what we are trying to encourage him to do and develop, but if he can get to three parts of the way of Billy Bremner then we have got a 5, 10, 15, 25 million pounds player on our books haven't we, so that is fantastic news.

" Both my strikers scored today so I am really pleased with that. We will always be linked with strikers if we don't score goals and we will continue to search for one if we think that we need to bring one in. Karl (Hawley) is one that has been under the radar and I don't know what is happening with his situation, whether he is going somewhere else or not.

" We haven't been able to do that one though and we are chasing other things and bits and pieces. Today though the strikers did look like scoring and that is pleasing. I don't if there was a Carlisle United car at Morecambe (watching Barrow's Jason Walker), maybe the car has got lost, that Carlisle car turns up everywhere. "

" We are looking at fielding a back four that doesn't concede goals and I have tried most of the permutations. What we are looking at there today is two players (Richard Keogh and Danny Livesey) who are very committed defensively. They are out and out defenders, they head it, they kick it, they put their bodies on the line.

" We did concede three goals today and we are not blaming our back four today, we thought that there were other areas that let us down in front of them, they need a little bit of protection at times. It is something that we look at though, it is something that we continue to work on and it is a possibility that we might do that one next week but everybody is in contention for places.

" I don't think there are other areas where we need to bring people in because I think that at the minute we have got a reasonably decent squad. We have got competition all over the pitch, we have got numbers in all those areas, I think that if we did that then there would have to be some movement out of the door, which is something that I don't really want to do.

" I have got the bulk of my squad in place, the striker is the one that we are looking to bring in to give us that final bit of competition upfront and one that can score goals on a regular basis. We will continue to do that but the rest of it is not too bad. We will be working very hard all over the weekend and on Monday to try to make that new striker happen though. "

" What we have got to do, you look at Paul Thirlwell and Tom Taiwo - who we both said are very decent players, and Graham Kavanagh who is playing in that more advanced role. We have to have some depth and we have to have some pressure on those players.

" It is up to Michael (Burns) and Gavin (Rothery), who are young players still finding their way, to provide that and I think that they are both doing very, very well. At the minute I think that probably the midfield trio that we have picked, or certainly the midfield two that we have picked are our best pair at the minute. Obviously little Bridgey (Marc Bridge-Wilkinson) has got a sore back and he would come into that group as well.

" You would expect Brentford to come full of energy and enthusiasm wouldn't you. They will be on a high, they have got promoted, we have got to make sure that they know that League One is definitely a better standard than League Two and make sure that we dampen everything that they have got.

" We have to absolutely roll up our sleeves and fight for everything for the first 15 to 20 minutes. Hopefully we get a goal, we quell a bit of their energy and we go on and take our game to them, rather than worrying too much about what they can do.

" All that we need to do to get everybody behind us is to win games. You don't get that easily though, we need to get off to a good start. If we can follow the same sort of day that we had against Millwall on the last game of the season and create that sort of atmosphere then it gives a massive encouragement to everybody. "
