United first-team coach Greg Abbott spoke to the assembled press about the disappointing 0-0 stalemate at home to relegation-threatened Chesterfield tonight, Abbott talking about the youthful look of the Carlisle side :

"It shows we are being brave and looking to the future. The club is trying to build and keep the wheels turning, and we've got a chance if these kids can come in and handle this level. They're at the start of their careers and they can take the club forward, which is fantastic.

"Our centre-forwards had a combined age of 37, and Chesterfield had one centre-forward (Wayne Allison) who was older than them put together! We are giving the young lads a chance. Nobody wanted to take a chance on Joe (Garner) but we have taken him out of a reserve team and he has been fantastic. And Johann (Smith) will prove to be fantastic too. But he needs time, he's got a lot to learn, and some players fit in quicker than others.

"Chesterfield are a very good side who have beaten some top sides in the cups this year and had a magnificent win at the weekend. And they came here and put men behind the ball, which is a pat on the back for us because it means they showed us a lot of respect. We didn't find that quality of pass and movement to break them down but we've got 12 games to go and we're still in with a shout of the play-offs. I think everyone's got to be really pleased with that.

"It wasn't a great game. When teams come and defend like they did - especially in the second half - they are hard to break down. Chesterfield played narrow and deep and there weren't many gaps out there but credit them, they defended very well. We are disappointed that we didn't win but it's another point gained and we have to be positive. Karl Hawley being out of the team is a massive blow - we will always miss him but I'm not making excuses."
