John Coleman Talks About The Game

John ColemanRochdale boss John Coleman spoke to BBC Radio Manchester and his club's official website after his side's 2-1 League One defeat against Carlisle at Brunton Park, Coleman not happy with the second 45 minutes that the 'Dale players put in :

"I'd just like to apologise to the supporters for our second-half performance and the players should apologise as well, it was way below standards, everything we said at half-time we didn't put into practice and they have done the complete opposite. We were second to every ball, we backed off them, we didn't ask any questions until the last 10 or 15 minutes and we got what we deserved, which was nothing.

"We started off like we were going to blow them away, in the first 15 minutes there was only one team in it. We missed a couple of good chances and then we have made a couple of errors that have invited them back into the game. From then on in they never looked back, second-half they took the game to us and we didn't have any answers, and we were very, very poor.

"After getting back into the game it is heartbreaking to concede the way we did, but it was symptomatic of the way we played tonight, we were nowhere near at our best tonight. Andrew Tutte was bright when he came on, Ashley (Grimes) has had a great chance, probably one of the best chances of the night and he has squandered it unfortunately, that is the way it is going for us at the moment.

"Jason (Kennedy) has scored a great header, but we didn't ask enough questions of Carlisle tonight, we did in the first 15 minutes and we threatened to run riot, and then just for whatever reason we went into our shell again. Give them their due, they are a decent side, they are not near the top of the league for nothing but we invited them onto us and we gave them too much space in our half.

"They got back into it because we got a little bit sloppy, we got a bit disheartened that we had missed a couple of chances and we started giving up chances. They have scored a goal and then we have dragged ourselves back in it, and then just when you think you can go on and win the game they score another goal which is lazy bad marking, bad play to be honest. I have got to take some of the blame for that because I have maybe stuck with players a little too long."

"It might be time now to bring a couple of players into the club, I have only brought two players in, I have brought Michael Symes and Kevin Long in and they have done well but they were part of a team tonight where nobody did well. Our second options are very limited and we are not hurting teams enough when we have great opportunities, we had the two best chances of the night tonight but we've wasted them both.

"We didn't condense the play, we have defended really well since I have come here and tonight we were a million miles away and we were punished. I feel sorry for our fans because they came in their numbers and they have travelled a long way and paid a lot of hard earned money, and they deserved to be treated better than they were treated in the second-half tonight.

"Tonight is a disaster for us, every time we have an opportunity to get points we can't squander it, we haven't won a game in five and for a team who are fighting for their lives it is nowhere near good enough. We are making a mountain out of there, there and there and very soon we are going to have to win every game we play. I still think we have got enough quality in the squad, we are just not showing it at times. From a battling performance on Saturday in the second-half where we dug in we have surrendered far too meekly tonight for me.

"I think whoever was going to score the first goal tonight was going to win the game, and unfortunately for us after the initial bright start there was only one team asking the questions. We had the let off with the disallowed goal, they have had a couple of chances before that and we just let them play far too easily through us.

"We didn't go out and press them, our midfield were very, very poor, we didn't close them down at any opportunity, we didn't pick up any second balls, we didn't pick runners up, we didn't hold the ball up upfront and that is a recipe for disaster, because consequently our back four couldn't get out and we got punished for it, then they didn't mark up and we were wide open.

"I'm not going to be focusing any energy on Huddersfield on Saturday yet, I will be concentrating on tonight, I will dissect tonight over the next two days. I have got to ram it home to the players but I have still got to pick some of these players on Saturday, but I am going to ram it home to them that that is totally unacceptable. It is totally unacceptable with the duty that they have got to the fans, they are the ones who pay their wages and I would be embarrassed to pick my wages up after our second-half performance tonight."
