New United centre-half Josh Gowling spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria on Friday evening ahead of tomorrow's pre-season friendly at Partick Thistle, Gowling talking about how he is settling in to life at his new club :

" It has been tiring, but we have done a lot of running and ball stuff so it has been good. Last week you just get your basics in, just get your heart rate going and stuff like that. This week we have done a lot of five-a-side and things like that, but we have also carried on with our running, so we are just getting our base really for the start of the season.

" It's especially good for me because I need to get to know the lads. Any new acquisition to the squad, you obviously bring them up and see how they cope with the rest of the boys. So it'd ideal really, every squad does it and I think that you have to do it every pre-season. There are a few funny lads but I won't mention any names or I might get beaten up if I do. They are a really tight-knit bunch of lads, so I'm just happy to be part of it and I'm just looking forward to the start of the season.

" Without a doubt there is a difference between Bournemouth and here. I've come into Carlisle this year and normally when I was at Bournemouth I was running in any pre-season that was done. This pre-season here has been by far my toughest pre-season, I've obviously not struggled but it has been really difficult to keep up with the lads.

" They are at a different level to be honest, when I was at Bournemouth we were at the bottom of the league and the football was completely different to the football that Carlisle play. They are at the top of the league, it's a much higher tempo and it's just a better style of football really, so I'm just trying to adjust at the moment. "

" A lot of the pre-season friendlies are just for your fitness to be honest. Obviously though, I think that we have got three weeks left of pre-season so the more friendlies that come up, the gaffer (John Ward) is going to be looking at who is he going to pick and stuff like that.

" The Kendal game was a tough game to be honest, it was our first pre-season game and the lads were a bit tired because we had had a really hard week. This week we have not done as much running as we did last week so we can try to concentrate on the football, a bit of formational play and things like that, so the lads are looking forward to it.

" It is a bit strange to be honest coming in, I think that I have got to do a speech tonight, just to introduce myself to the lads, so to be honest I am bricking it a little bit but never mind. The lads have been really good here, I've come in and they have taken to me really well, and I've taken to them, so it's just great.

" You move around and you make friends at every club so obviously it's a bit disappointing when you leave a club and you leave your friends. When you are coming to a club like Carlisle though and the players are so friendly then it's just great.

" I've been rooming with a young lad called Connor (Tinnion) who is only about 17, he does snore. I haven't told him yet but I think that I might give him a little dig tonight if he carries on snoring any more. He's a good lad though, he's done really well actually in the training camp, he's only 17 and he has come up from the youth team and he has slotted in really well. "
