Kallum Higginbotham Talks About The Game

Last updated : 22 September 2012 By Thetashkentterror

New United loan signing Kallum Higginbotham (KH) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) following Carlisle's 2-1 League One win away to Coventry, Higginbotham saying that it was a fantastic victory for the Blues:

JP

Welcome to Carlisle United, how does it feel to have got your debut out of the way?

KH

Obviously, it was a fantastic result for the boys, they have worked hard all week and then to come here and get a 2-1 victory is fantastic. But, just on me, I am glad that I have come here, and like I said in my interview earlier in the week, I am just coming here to try to get some games under my belt and find my confidence and hopefully I can help Carlisle get up the table where they deserve to be.

JP

Is that your aim in coming in then at the moment? Just looking to get games and hopefully try to play your way into the thinking of the manager at Huddersfield (Simon Grayson), or are you maybe further down the line looking to perhaps look for another club one day?

KH

Like I said, obviously I just need to get the minutes back under my belt, get my fitness back and hopefully I can cement a place in the Carlisle team. At the minute, obviously I didn't start today but I will be looking to work hard in the week and hopefully I can get a game on Wednesday because Joe Garner is ineligible to play. So, we will just take it from there.

JP

Yeah, hopefully get you involved in that one. What would you say is your favourite position? I have read up a fair bit on you and it says you like to play in that sort of a second striker role, but whenever I have seen you for Huddersfield you have been used in the wide areas?

KH

Yeah, obviously anywhere attacking really, that is what sort of player I am, an attack minded player, so anywhere on either wing or upfront or even in behind the striker. I don't mind, I just like to be on the pitch and playing wherever that may be.

JP

Obviously, with Coventry twice late on as they were pushing for the equaliser hitting the post, I mean United rode their luck at times, but on the whole feel of the game today it felt like United deserved the three points?

KH

Yeah, definitely, obviously coming to a place like this they are going to be pushing on when they are 2-1 down late on. But, like you said, on the whole of the game I thought we deserved it no problem.

JP

In terms of your team-mates, you have had a little bit of time with them now, including a bit of game time, what do you make of the quality that there is here for United to play with? I mean already now with the victory up towards the edge of the play-offs again?

KH

Yeah, like the gaffer (Greg Abbott) said before the game, this is a vital game. Obviously, if we win we are looking up the table and if we lose then we have got to look behind us. We have won the game and deservedly won the game, but the quality that they have got in the dressing room they can definitely push up if not automatic, 100% get into those play-offs and then that is a lottery.

JP

Are you surprised with some of the players they have got in there Coventry to see how they were struggling today? They just seemed disjointed as much as anything didn't they, they seemed like they had a lot of individuals rather than a team?

KH

Yeah, definitely, when I heard the squad read out just before the kick-off I turned to one of the lads on the bench and said that they have got some quality in that team. Like you said, it just looked like they were playing individuals and they have not got that togetherness. Obviously, the new manager (Mark Robins) has only just come in and has probably not worked with them yet, so they might get that and I wouldn't be surprised if you see them near the top of the table come the end of the season.

JP

Yeah, starting to push their way up, that said, I am sure you will want to play your way into the starting line-up, but look at United's bench today with the likes of Liam Noble on there, yourself joining some of the youngsters who are looking very impressive for Carlisle in (Brad) Potts, (Mark) Beck and (Dave) Symington, I mean there is a lot more depth with the arrival of you and Garner in there for Greg Abbott who just a week ago was bemoaning maybe the wafer thin-ness of the Carlisle United squad. How quickly things turn around in football?

KH

Exactly, like you just said, that is football, obviously a week in football changes a lot of things. Like you said, the arrival of me and Joe Garner obviously puts a lot of depth into that team and hopefully I can just push on and get into that starting eleven.

JP

It is not a bad way to come in and join a new club is it, coming into a winning team away at a ground like the Ricoh Arena, and just having the small affair of a massive cup tie against one of the big Premier League sides in Tottenham as well coming up?

KH

I think I timed that one right didn't I just to get the Tottenham game in, but like I said, I just hopefully can get started on Wednesday if the manager sees that I can start, and hopefully show the fans what I can do.

JP

Yeah, what about them, I have just asked Greg Abbott about them, but even with all of the levels that you have played at, just seeing 1,000 fans coming away, just under 1,000 fans, it is great support Carlisle get in these away games?

KH

Yeah, fantastic, obviously they had 10,000 here altogether inside the stadium and I think our fans made the most noise without a doubt. Obviously, I would just like to say thank you to them and that has obviously lifted the lads to the victory.

JP

It is great to have you here, I hope you really enjoy your three months.

KH

No worries, thank you.
