Blues manager Neil McDonald
United boss Neil McDonald spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Saturday evening as he gave his opinion on the Cumbrians opening their League One Season with a 1-1 draw on the road at Banks's Stadium, McDonald commenting :

" I was very, very pleased with the first-half, I thought our tempo was good and we were too strong for them in the first-half. Really we had situations that we should have made a little bit better of to get that second goal and try to kill them off. In the second-half they were always going to come out of the blocks and unfortunately we have conceded an early goal.

" That gave them a little bit of an up but we stuck at it and then came into the game later on in the second-half and had another couple of chances. So all-in-all the first-half performance was excellent and I'll take a point away from home, although I've obviously got to be slightly disappointed after the first-half performance.

" We all want to be greedy don't we, it's not easy playing against a newly promoted team away from home because we experienced that last year with Doncaster. There are plenty of positives out of the game though, we scored a fantastic goal again, I thought we played really well in the first-half, dominated the first-half and we thoroughly deserved our lead at half-time.

" I was slightly disappointed that we didn't get that second goal to try to kill them off and give us that little bit of breathing space to allow us to make one mistake, which we did right after half-time. We've stuck at it, we're pleased in all with a point away from home. We are trying to get the three points all the time aren't we, we're really pleased with the first-half performance.

" Walsall came out of the traps probably having had a little bit of a telling off of their manager (Richard Money). I didn't go over the top with my team, I told them that they would be coming out strong, they couldn't play any worse than they had done in the first-half because we didn't allow to play them in the first-half. We just gave them that little bit of space, too much, and that encouraged them. We stuck at it though and got the point away from home. "

" He (Peter Murphy) just twisted his ankle, it's a little bit swollen so we'll see how that goes when we get back to Carlisle. We'll have him in tomorrow and assess whether or not it is going to settle down and if he is going to be available for Tuesday. It's just his ankle so he's well strapped up, we'll see how that goes tomorrow.

" Our record signing (Joe Garner) came on, I couldn't really start him as we had done all our team preparation during the week. It's nice for him to get on, he's had a hectic 48-72 hours with all the transfer palaver. He showed what he can do again can't he. He gets stuck in, he's had a couple of shots and he's played a few through balls so that is encouraging in itself.

" I'm slightly disappointed after the first-half performance but you always have to take a point away from home if you can get it. It's certainly better than starting off with a defeat that's for sure. You have the nerves before the game and I thought we started off really well, that settles your nerves, the game has gone now though so we move on to the next one.

" We're still trying to strengthen and we'll be continuing to do that over the next couple of days. On the crowd it just shows that they want to support their team and it's fantastic. Hopefully they have gone away, not as happy as they should be after the first-half performance, but happy enough that we have got a point on the board as early as the first game. Signs are encouraging in my opinion.

" It (Bury) is another tough away game, they play quite direct I believe, we've had them watched a couple of times. So we'll assess everybody tomorrow, see how everybody is and then we'll start work again on Monday ready in preparation for the Bury game. "
