Matty Robson Talks About The Game

United winger Matty Robson (MR) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Paul Newton (PN) following Carlisle's 2-1 League One victory at home to Notts County, Robson saying it was one of the toughest game of the season:

PN

I imagine you have just left a very, very bouncing dressing room?

MR

Yeah, very upbeat and so it should be against what I thought was probably one of our toughest games of the season. They put us under some real pressure and we have come out on the other side with a victory and that is massively important.

PN

Yeah, as one of the texters pointed out, I guess a sign of when things are turning round for you is maybe when you weren’t always on your game today but you ground out that result and that is what happens when teams have got a bit of confidence about them?

MR

Yeah, it was the first time in obviously a couple of weeks that we started slowly, which was something that we addressed at half-time. But, we found that extra bit of grit and determination and pulled through in the end. We had the man of the match go to Mark Gillespie and it was fully deserved, outstanding today.

PN

Yeah, absolutely, it shows how much character there is, or has been instilled back into this side when you had a great chance to take the lead through Mark Beck and that went wide and they went up the other end and got that goal, but your heads didn’t drop, you got right back in it just before half-time?

MR

Yeah, it was a tough blow, we know Beck is a fantastic finisher, if you see him in training he would have put that away nine times out of ten. Unfortunately it didn’t go in and they went up the other end and scored, but we showed real character today to come back. I think before the game we were determined to get that third win in a row, it’s been a long time coming, and now we look forward to four in a row.

PN

Was that something you have been aware of because in the media and the fans have spoken about it, five years in permanent charge and Greg Abbott couldn’t manage three league wins in a row, so it has been a bit of a monkey on your back if you like, was that something the players were aware of?

MR

Yeah, obviously we see the press and it was drilled in our talk before the game, can we do three, and the answer is yes, we have done it today. Next week it will be can we do four, and we don’t want to sort of sit back on that now and think yeah, we have done three wins in a row so we can take our foot off the gas.

Carlisle United is not a team that can play good football when it takes its foot off the gas, we have got to be bob on all the time and we have got to put our interest into the game and obviously make teams work hard for everything that they give us, and we will be looking for a victory next weekend.

PN

You had a big role to play in both goals, just talk us through your free-kick first, did you think it was on its way in?

MR

Yeah, I can’t remember who it was who seemed to jump out of the way, I think it was Andre Boucaud, he sort of moved out of the way of the ball. I think the keeper [Bartosz Bialkowski] obviously thought he was going to block it but it has gone into the bottom corner. The second one I think was a break, I pulled it back from the by-line, James Berrett has had his shot saved and David Amoo has got his deserved goal today for the amount of effort and running he has put in.

PN

I have got to ask you, the players are obviously responding to Graham Kavanagh, they are clearly playing for him, I guess you would be happy to see Graham given the job on a full-time basis now?

MR

Yeah, there is obviously no reason why not, but like I said the other week, whoever it goes to they have got a team that is full of confidence at the minute. But, you would think he would be in the driving position now to take over.
