Blues manager Neil McDonald
United boss Neil McDonald spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey yesterday evening as he gave his opinion on Carlisle's 3-2 home win over Port Vale, McDonald talking about the need to be patient against teams that try to shut up shop when winning :

" It was some comeback, I didn't think we deserved to be 2-0 down though to tell you the truth, and the whole crowd was probably stunned about it as well. They have had two shots, one from 25 yards and then one from 95 yards. We came in at half-time though and there was no point in dwelling on that, we were getting behind, getting through them and it was just hopefully a matter of time before we put the ball in the back of the net. I said to them – if you get three chances then you've got to stick them in the back of the net and that's what they've done so all credit to them.

" We asked the forward players to take people on and put the ball in the box, but unfortunately we just couldn't get on the end of it, the second half was totally different though. Substitutions do work, I suppose I have been criticised in the past for not using them but there is a time and a place to use substitutes and this was the time. Luckily when you do make them then sometimes they work and fortunately for us it did.

" I always sensed we could win the game, you might think I'm talking rubbish, but I always sensed that we could win the game, and that if we got the goal early enough to give us the chance then we would be on the front foot. We would be attacking and they would be panicking because they have conceded, and that's what happened. If you put the ball in the right area then you give yourselves a chance of scoring, and then we probably scored the third too early for me, we could have done with it being a couple of minutes to go before we scored.

" We were always comfortable in the second half, Keiren (Westwood) blames himself for the first couple of goals but he made a save which could have been 3-0 just before half-time, and then he made a couple of saves in the second half. So he's made up for, perhaps not mistakes from him, but a little bit of indecision. We played some good stuff, we had to be patient, it wasn't going forward to just whack it up, we had to play it in and then play it out wide and I think we did that, it's probably the best we have done that all season.

" It's great when we score three goals but I'm not too happy about conceding two, but when you score three it makes it extra special when you come from behind as well. He (Neale McDermott) has been waiting patiently for his turn, and I've asked him to be a little bit more high tempo in the games he is playing in. His attitude in training, just like everybody else who can't get in the team, is fantastic, then when they are given the chance we are just hoping and crossing our fingers that they do take their chance, he's contributed well as everybody else has today.

" I'm not so sure if it was my war dance that got the crowd going after the first goal. Sometimes they have to see what we are trying to do, and they were obviously still stunned I think that we were 2-0 down, and it was a little bit quiet. Once we got the first goal though it took the roof off and that's what we want from start to finish. They have been very supportive and very good, but they must understand that teams come sometimes just to shut up shop, which in all fairness I think they did. They are leading 2-0 and it's just frustration, stick by the players because we are trying to do the right things and hopefully we've sent them home happy two weeks on the trot.

" Ten days off now is good as, to be fair, we are quite intensive on the training ground. The players will have a couple of days off this week and rightly so because they have been working hard ever since the start of the season. We don't really give them that many days off but I think they deserve it at this time with a lot of games coming up over Christmas. They'll recharge and they deserve time off with their families, hopefully they can get all their Christmas shopping done because they won't be getting much time off after that.

" I think they'll want to come in though even if they are given their days off, but they thoroughly deserved the three points today even though we were 2-0 down. He (Kevin Harper) is enjoying his football, he's a decent player and he's getting stronger with each game, he can certainly take people on and if we can get other people on the end of his crosses then we'll score a lot more goals. "
