United boss Neil McDonald spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Saturday evening as he gave his opinion on the sometimes backs-to-the-wall 1-0 opening day win at home to Doncaster. McDonald talking about the preparation for future games and this thoughts regarding substitutions :

" We're very pleased, but that's all behind us now and we have to make sure that we are ready for Chesterfield. You don't know where you are when you first start off, you come into a new league and everyone I've spoken to has said Doncaster will be there or thereabouts, so this was a good marker. We got off to a good start by scoring first, then they almost score straight after the kick-off, then really probably Keiren (Westwood) has made one more save and that's about it.

" When you stop a team that is possibly favourites for that league to two or only two or three chances then I was well chuffed. We didn't pass the ball in the last ten or fifteen minutes of the first half, we could have kept the ball a little better. Then I just asked for a clean sheet in the second half, and I got that and I'm very, very pleased.

" Everybody played their part, to win your first game at home, to win the manager's first game at home, it just makes everybody very, very happy, played one, won one and long may it continue. Work has started this afternoon for Chesterfield because Colin Suggett has been down there (Bournemouth) watching Chesterfield, he's going to stop down there and watch Yeovil when they play on Tuesday night, so we're well covered and well prepared for the opposition coming up.

" As I've said before, it's not going to be easy and if it needs to take 1-0, 1-0, 1-0, then I'll take 1-0, 1-0, 1-0 every single time. As I said yesterday Doncaster obviously cause problems with their height and they put the ball in there, but Keiren has come and collected everything and kept hold of it, and the two centre-halves have played everything that has come onto their head as well. Really they weren't getting really behind us, or they weren't getting through us, and that's why I just kept it the same.

" Sometimes if you make changes then the balance loses, and sometimes they are not switched on as much as the ones who are playing already. So I just kept it as it was , and then just a little bit of fresh legs and a little bit more height really with Derek (Holmes) coming on as well, to make sure that if we needed to defend against another long throw or corner we had a little bit more height in the box.

" (David Raven) had a little bit of a dead leg, I thought he started off really well, (Jonathan) Forte is a handful, he'll give plenty of defenders the run-a-round this season, he played really well for me for half an hour. Arni (Paul Arnison) came on, he's been waiting for his chance, he's been fantastic in training, he's got a superb attitude and I think it showed when he just stepped in and it looked as though he had started the game as well, so it was very pleasing.

" The crowd was brilliant, it's really nice, hopefully they'll come back for the next game and support the players, I've no doubt that they'll be going to Chesterfield which is great for me and great for the players because they really enjoy the support. The pitch is brilliant, it's probably second to none so congratulations to David (Mitchell) our groundsman, he's worked brilliantly over the summer to get a pitch for us to play football because that's the way we want to do it. Sometimes it's not fluent, but I'd like to think that any team that starts off isn't fluent, that'll take a few games to get going but I think they showed that they can play some good football, and we can certainly stick the ball in the back of the net. "
