United boss Neil McDonald spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Tuesday night as he gave his opinion on the 3-1 penalty shootout defeat at Accrington in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy :

" We've shot ourselves in the foot but all-in-all I'm very pleased with the performance and the way we went about it. We've got the wrong result again but it's all about the performance and keeping the confidence up, the confidence is there after 90 minutes.

" We have to put with own-goals I suppose, defensively I thought we were very, very solid tonight, that is probably the only chance they have had. They didn't come out of their half in the first-half, we've closed them down, we've harried, we've played on the front foot and we've created chances but it's the usual thing that we haven't stuck it in the back of the net. I think I'm going to have to address the forward situation and I'm going to have to work seriously hard to bring somebody in.

" It's a huge worry to be honest, people have had chances but they are not putting the chances away so I'll have to address that. Those two (Simon Grand and Danny Livesey) and the back four in particular haven't put a foot wrong and they haven't really been tested. They (Accrington) have had had one shot in the first-half then they have had the corner to score the goal and I think that's all they have had.

" I feel a little bit frustrated and annoyed, but I said my bit after the game that whether we won or lost on penalties that I was very pleased with the performance. If we take into that the game on Saturday then we will have a great chance of stopping the rot, I don't think they won the game though – we lost it.

" We've driven and we've won the ball in the areas that we've wanted to win it in but we're not being clinical enough to finish teams off. Really we should have been up by a far bigger margin than to put ourselves under pressure that one mistake is a goal and a draw, it gives you some food for thought I suppose.

" Their goalkeeper has obviously won the game and we've missed three out of four penalties so that is disappointing. As I say though the 90 minutes was a far better performance off the front foot, the balance was much better, we just need to stick the ball in the back of the net and I'll probably have to address that in the next few days. "
