Peter Murphy Talks About The County Game

United defender Peter Murphy spoke exclusively to BBC Radio Cumbria yesterday evening as he gave a few thoughts on the romp against Stockport and his own game :

" It was all about a team performance, everybody clicked today, the work-rate was superb, everybody was working hard for the team and we got the result. I think we have been saying it for a while that somebody is going to get one of those results and fortunately for us it was today.

" We were using our wide men today, Simon Hackney had a great game and then Raphael Nade set up the first two goals I think it was with just sheer determination and his pace and power.

" It all came together today and with the supply line there were loads of crosses going in, we hit the woodwork a couple of times from crosses. We put the keeper under a lot of pressure and we got a goal from one of them so it all came together today.

" I like playing centre-back, that is where I have always wanted to play but if I have to play left-back for the team I obviously don’t mind doing that. It’s a position that I can play and I have played in many other positions so hopefully I won’t be playing there for too long. I would like to get back at centre-back but as long as I’m playing in the team you can’t really argue.

" Managers will always say that having too many options in defence is a lovely problem that they like to have. It’s just up to us to keep playing that way and hopefully next week we’ll get another good result but nobody is going to guarantee another 6-0.

" The FA Cup isn’t really a welcome break. With a game when you win 6-0 you obviously want to play the next League game but it doesn’t really matter. If it’s a Cup game you want to go out and do the same performance every time.

" We just want to keep winning, we’ve turned it around from those four defeats, that’s three wins and one draw now so we’ve just turned it around. We have to keep winning, that’s all we want to do, no matter what game it is we just want to play.

" You get a sense of relief and happiness that you’ve worked so hard and your hard work has paid off. It’s not just oh yeah it was easy today, we worked so hard to get that result and that’s what we have to do every week. You like to win but you like to win every game, even if it’s 1-0 you’d take that but 6-0 is obviously great for the fans because they are all buzzing. "

On the subject of Paul Arnison trying to claim the third United goal Murphy commented :

" Arny is trying to claim it, he ran up at half-time to have a word with the referee but the referee just laughed at him. The way he celebrated it looked like he thought he had scored but it was a terrible error by the goalkeeper. I felt sorry for him, I had my hands on my head feeling sorry for the keeper but obviously I liked the goal.

" With the two good saves in the second half I think it was a confidence thing for the keeper, he had to try and turn it around but obviously there were six goals went in past him so he couldn’t really do much today. I know he’s a young lad on loan from Wolves, so hopefully his head doesn’t go under and lose confidence from that. "
