Reaction From Blades Boss Danny Wilson

Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson spoke to BBC Radio Sheffield after his side's 0-0 League One draw against Carlisle at Bramall Lane, Wilson saying the Blues were very hard to break down:

“When a team comes and plays in a system that Carlisle applied today it is very difficult to break down. I will make no excuses for not breaking them down, it is just sometimes you need that little shade of luck at times. We didn’t have it, we had a couple of great opportunities in front of goal and have not taken them, and it happens in games.

“That is football, sometimes it doesn’t always go the way you want it to, and particularly at home if the last two games had been the opposite way round and we had drawn at Tranmere and won here then the four points we have picked up would have looked great. But, the opposite way round when we win away from home and don’t win at home it looks a poor result.

“But, certainly from where I am sitting the positive is we have moved up a place, we have gained a place believe it or not. Yes it is an opportunity missed, we know the extra two points would have been brilliant but we haven’t got them. We have got games in front of us that we have got be ready for and be positive in approaching them, and that is what we will do.

“I think the fact that Bramall Lane is such a tough place for teams to come and play at, that is exactly why they play in the system that they do. They get lots of bodies behind the ball, they are not particularly adventurous coming out and you just have to be very patient. If you play into their hands and just boot the ball wherever it maybe then it is very predictable."

“You have to be patient and in having patience there we did create some good chances I have got to say. Carlisle got quite lucky at times, certain balls fell in their favour in the box when you think crikey, just drop in our favour and it will be in the back of the net. We didn’t take a couple of opportunities that I thought we should have done and perhaps done better, but it is through no lack of endeavour and enthusiasm from the players.

“It just gets frustrating and obviously there is an anxiousness that steps in as the game comes towards its end. You see lads swiping at balls because they just want to get that goal that would settle us down, so it is frustrating but we will get through it. Going down to ten men sometimes galvanises teams as well, they weren’t that adventurous as well I have to say in the way they played.

“They got the ball up to the striker and supported it and if it fell to one of them in the second phase then they played from there. But, when they did go down to ten men there was absolutely no way they were going to look to open up and put another striker up the top. It just tightened them up even more at the back and they just sat people right in front of the edge of the box and made it very difficult.

“Like I say, that is where the patience has got to come in sometimes and a little bit of magic from somebody does help, but we couldn’t break them down. The players have got to be positive and we are not going to be just sitting back and waiting for things to happen. We have got to make things happen here and it has got to come from Kevin McDonald or whoever it may be to try to do that little bit of something out of the ordinary that will separate the teams.

“Kevin was very unlucky on a couple of occasions, the keeper (Mark Gillespie) has pulled off a great save from him in the first-half. I have to say that Kevin was very, very active today, he was very proactive for the team, I thought he probed well, passed it well and ran the ball well. Very unlucky really, I thought he had a very good performance. But, it is going to happen, frustration is going to happen at certain times, and whether a team gets a deserved point or not it may happen. But, it can’t move us from our focus and what our focus is, and that is obviously to be in the top two.”
