Reaction From Boro Boss Graham Westley

Stevenage manager Graham Westley spoke to BBC Three Counties Radio after his side's 0-0 draw against Carlisle at Brunton Park, Westley happy with a clean sheet for the visitors:

“Nil against always takes a lot of hard work in a football match. You don’t get nil against if you don’t put one foot in front of the other, put your blocks in, put your tackles in, get your organisation right and defend set-plays well. When you come away from home on difficult surfaces where it is a little bit back to front in the game and you are turned a lot and the crowd gets a few decisions and you face a lot of set-plays, when you do that then there is a lot of hard work in getting the result.

“So, I think there was a lot of hard work in getting the result. Could we have won it? Sure, we had a moment or two. Could we have lost it? I didn't really feel in any serious danger throughout the 90 minutes but football's a funny game and if you don't get your work-rate right, anything can happen. Will I take three wins and three draws in six?

“Absolutely, I think I would have put my money on that and I would have come away with twelve points from six games as a reaction to that. So, that is where we are at, and it now six home games and four away games left. But, to be unbeaten in the away games we've had I think is a strong return from the lads.

“"I don't think we were nervous at all, I think it was very difficult conditions out there, and I think that affected the way the game was played. I think that to put your foot on the ball and try to pass it was very difficult. It was windy, it was bobbly and as a back player if you were trying to play out from the back and wanting to receive things then it is not the time of the year really to play that kind of football.

“So, we did have to bypass midfield a little bit and try to get seconds and play in their half, and I think both sides played in a similar way trying to feed wide players and looked to disrupt centre-halves with difficult balls at the back of them. So, it was that kind of game, and you have seen throughout the league on these types of surfaces and these types of conditions at this time of year, it was a typical game of football. You have to battle out your points, you have to earn your clean sheets and you have to be on top of your set-plays to win games."

“Jon Ashton got injured and it takes a lot to take him out of action, so that was a blow to us for the second-half. Credit to John Mousinho who slotted in at the back and was very professional and disciplined and did a good job, because Lee Miller is a right handful. He is one of the better players in this league, I think most clubs top or bottom would want that player in their side.

“You have to put a lot of hard work in with your legs in the challenge, with your voice for the organisation, a lot of hard work to keep a clean sheet on any given day. When you have got players of the quality of Sam Byrne who we had in ourselves earlier in the season and Miller, when you have got those types of players and David Amoo has got good pace, when you have got those players against you then you have got to work very hard for the clean sheet and I thought the lads did.

“We need to make sure that we use our week off now really wisely. There is lots of work that you can do whilst resting your legs and we have got to make sure that we get that work done. We have got a lot of new lads around and there is detail in our game that is lacking because of that. Silly little things in areas of the pitch, a throw-in routine that a full-back who is new in doesn’t realise that you have got in your locker.

“So, there are all amounts of detail that you want to get into your game because it could be one of those little bits of detail that wins the next three points. It is a home game next weekend, a really good home game [MK Dons], a local game. It is always one that gets the fans up and we look forward to that, if we get three points there then we will be in good shape.

“You want all of your players fit now, it gives you more options when your players are fit, and the lads of the quality of Filipe Morais, he is a player who can win a game. We have seen him up at Crewe was probably the most memorable taking them to pieces almost single handedly. So, when you have got players of that calibre and they are fit and available again then that is always good news.”
