Magpies frontman Karl Hawley (KH) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) after his side's 3-0 opening day win over Carlisle at Brunton Park, Hawley though first fielding questions from his former United team-mate Chris Lumsdon :
CL
Now then Mr Hawley, who was really the main man who made you at this club?
KH
Erm, Derek Holmes.
CL
Horrendous! Alright then, how much were your new teeth because when we know they are veneers?
KH
(laughs)
JP
On a more serious note, how did it feel being back today and what a start to the season for you and your team-mates?
KH
Yeah, it was brilliant being back up in Carlisle, I got a great reception and I would like to thank the fans for that as well, and it just felt like I was coming back home to be honest.
JP
A really good performance from yourself and Lee Hughes upfront, became a bit of a pantomime villain today didn't he but that is maybe down to the way that he played and maybe down to the fact that he was frustrating Carlisle and they couldn't really find a way around the whole team to be honest, let alone him?
KH
Yeah, Hughesy is that sort of player, he upsets a lot of people, but he is priceless for our team and he does a great job.
JP
What was it like being back here and also coming away with all three points? Of course Carlisle beat Notts County home and away last season, both slender victories which you were involved in, what did it feel like today coming back to your old stomping ground and leaving with such an emphatic victory?
KH
Well it felt brilliant being out there personally with the reception I got from the home fans and our own fans. But, the boys did well, especially in the first-half, the first 45 minutes we just sort of got in Carlisle's face and we got three goals and you can't really as for more there.
JP
Did you expect the reception you got from the Carlisle fans here today?
KH
Erm, yeah, because I got quite a good one last time, but you never know, because obviously I get a few random shouts saying 'Carlisle reject' adn that, so you have to take those on the chin. But, overall I was delighted with the reception I got and it is very special to me.
JP
Given a bit of time in your career since Brunton Park, I mean nobody would ever stand in the way of a player or a manager or a team's ambition, but do you regret some of the factors in the way that you left Carlisle United?
KH
I don't really regret a lot of things in my life, I wanted to play in a higher league, if Carlisle had got promoted that season then it could have been a different story. I had the opportunity and I think any player in my position would have taken that. So, it was never me saying I am too good for Carlisle or anything like, it was I want to play as high as I can and you can't really pass up those opportunities.
JP
No, I don't think anyone would argue with that, what was your highlight personally of your time here with Carlisle United?
KH
Playing with Chris Lumsdon, hs banter. No, I can't really just nail it down to one thing, it was such a friendly club, everyone really close together like backroom staff and into the players. It was just a nice place to be, all the lads were top quality, whoever came in got welcomed with both arms and it was a great bunch of lads and good people here.
JP
And in terms of your own future it looked like your time at Notts County might have come to an end but you really seem to be getting on with your new manager (Martin Allen) we hear, and looking at the way that you slotted into his formation today I think you might be at Meadow Lane a little while longer?
KH
Hopefully, the gaffer has come in and he has been brilliant with me, and I just wanted games and he seems to be giving me that and I have got to stay in the team and that is my main aim.
JP
Well look, we look forward to seeing you back at Meadow Lane, Carlisle have rather obliged you with the points here today, let's hope you will return the favour when Carlisle come down there later in the season?
KH
Erm, no, we will try not to, thanks anyway.
